12. COMPOUND CUTS

A compound cut is one that uses a mitre cut and a bevel cut at the same time. While cutting wide workpieces, you need to
use the slide mechanism.
1. Loosen the bevel locking handle (P).
2. Put the cutting arm in the required position. Tighten the bevel locking handle once more.
3. Loosen the mitre handle and set it at the required angle. Tighten the mitre handle once more to lock the saw table.
4. Stand in the line of the handle to make the cut.

13. CUTTING SKIRTING BOARDS

Mitre saws can be used for cutting skirting boards. The
method will depend on the type of skirting board, its charac-
teristics and applications.
1. Use vices or clamps whenever possible. Place protective
tape on the clamped surface so as to not damage the sur-
face of the board.
2. Identify the part of the skirting board to cut and draw a
cutting line on the workpiece.
3. Make several test cuts on scrap material before making
the final cut.
N.B. : the wood may split because of the thickness of the
board or because the type of blade is not appropriate.

14. CUTTING CORNICES AND MOULDINGS

One of the unique characteristics of the saw is the ease with
which you can cut cornices.
Cornices can be cut very exactly with your saw. The two
surfaces of the cornice must fit against the wall or ceiling
and vice versa.
Below is an example of how to cut the inside and outside
corners of cornices with 52/38° wall angles (Fig.21).
N.B. : While cutting cornices with a 45° wall angle, the
method below is the same for inside and outside corners,
only the bevel cut position is always 30° and the mitre cut is
35 1/4° to the left or right.
1. Set the mitre angle to 31.62° to the right. A positive stop is
provided for the fast setting of that mitre angle. Set the saw
blade at a bevel angle of 33.9°.
2. Place the cornice on the saw table with the ceiling side of
the cornice against the guide fence and make the cut. Note
that you need to use a vice to hold the workpiece firmly
against the table. The piece of cornice used for the out-
side corner is always to the right of the blade. The piece of
cornice used for the inside corner is always to the left of the
blade.
3. To make the corresponding halves of inside and outside
corners, simply set the saw to the 31.62° left-hand mitre po-
sition. A positive stop is provided for the fast setting of that
mitre angle. The saw blade has already been set to the bevel
angle of 33.9° for the previous cut.
4. Place the cornice on the saw table with the wall side of
the cornice against the guide fence and make the cut. Note
again that you need to use a vice to hold the workpiece
firmly against the table. The piece of cornice used for the
outside corner is always to the right of the blade. The piece
of cornice used for the inside corner is always to the left of
the blade.
