essential for safety to verify the free space required beneath
the user at the workplace before each occasion of use, so that,
in the event of a fall there will be no collision with the ground or
other obstacle in the fall path.
Operation and use: Attach the SRL overhead to a suitable
anchorage or anchorage connector. Perform a pre-use check
of the equipment, to ensure that it operates correctly. To check
operation pull smoothly on the lifeline listening for the audible
clicking, then pull sharply on the lifeline to engage the locking
mechanism.
Connect the self locking snap
hook on the end of the lifeline
to the designated fall arrest
attachment point of a full
body harness
.
E
Once connected to the SRL
the user is free to move about
the working area. The lifeline will extract and retract without
hesitation. If the lifeline is prevented from retracting during
normal use, extract the lifeline fully and allow it to retract
under tension. Then check the locking function of the device.
If the lifeline continues to not retract fully then return the SRL
to an authorised person for inspection and recertifi cation.
An increase in fall distance can occur if the lifeline is prevented
from retracting, this must be avoided.
F
1 Never attach an additional lanyard or similar component to
lengthen the line.
2 Do not allow the lifeline to pass through legs or under arms.
3 This product is intended for overhead applications only.
Never use this product for ground level attachments or cable
systems
. Never use over an edge
F
4 Do not allow the lifeline to be in contact with or rub against
sharp edges.
NOTE: When the SRL is not in use, do not allow the lifeline
to be fully extracted for long periods of time as this may cause
weakening of the retraction spring. Do not let go of the lifeline
as it will retract at high speed potentially damaging internal
parts. If the SRL is positioned high above the users head, the
use of a tag line/second line is acceptable to allow the SRL to
fully retract. Tag lines/second lines must be removed from the
device before use.
Inspection instructions: Regular and periodic examinations of
the SRL are required to ensure the safety of the user, which is
dependent on the continued effi ciency and durability of the SRL.
1 Inspect the SRL to see if
the visual load indicator
has deployed, this will
determine if a fall has
occurred. Latchways
Sealed SRL incorporate
an indicating swivel hook
designed to deploy in the
event of a fall. If any red colour is visible around the swivel
area of the hook then loading has occurred

2 Inspect to ensure all labels are present and fully legible.
3 Inspect connecting hooks or karabiners for working condition
and signs of damage or corrosion.
4 Visually inspect the entire unit for signs of corrosion, damage
or distortion. Ensure all fastenings are present and secure.
5 Fully extract the lifeline. As the lifeline
retracts it must do so without hesitation
(no slack line should occur). During
extraction and retraction ensure that a
clicking sound can be heard which
indicates that the locking mechanism is
functioning correctly
.

6 Pull the lifeline sharply making sure that
this causes the device to lock up.
7 Inspect lifeline. If the lifeline has any
cuts, broken strands, kinks,
bird-caging, welding spatter, burns,
abraded areas or shows signs of
excessive soiling, corrosion or UV
degradation it must be replaced
WARNING! If the SRL has been subjected to loading, or
you are in any doubt concerning the safety or condition of
the device, it must be removed from service immediately
and recertifi ed by an authorised person. It may not be
used again until confi rmed in writing by a competent
person that it is safe to do so.
A periodic examination of the device should be completed
by an authorised person other than the user at least every
12 months. Local legislation or environmental conditions
(corrosive or chemical environments) may dictate more frequent
recertifi cation intervals.
NOTE: It is mandatory that a full service of this product be
completed within 2 years of manufacture and annually thereafter.
The life of the product can be affected by environmental
conditions. If, during periodic inspection by a competent person,
the product is deemed unsafe it should be removed from service.
NOTE: Authorised person means a person who is trained and
approved by Latchways in identifying hazards or dangerous
conditions of the self retracting lifeline.
It is the responsibility of the site safety offi cer or the user
to maintain a record of each periodic inspection in the
recertifi cation log which can be found at the front of this manual.
Maintenance, Storage and Transportation: If required,
clean the SRL exterior, lifeline and labels (to maintain legibility)
with warm water (40°C) and non biological detergent then
rinse. An excessive build-up of dirt or paint etc. on the lifeline
may compromise the retraction. If the SRL becomes wet, either
from being in use or from cleaning, position the SRL such that
any excess water can drain out and leave to dry naturally away
from direct heat. The full body harness and any other system
components should be cleaned and stored according
to manufacturer's instructions.
Store the SRL in a cool, dry, clean environment. Ensure SRL
is away from dust, oil and direct sunlight. Inspect the SRL after
long periods of storage.
During transportation the device must be protected to prevent
damage or contamination.
