housing
• Keep the saw footplate firmly against the workpiece to minimize
counter-force and vibration
• Squeeze the trigger to start the tool and let the saw come to full speed
before starting cut.
a) cUtting laMinates
As the saw blade cuts on the upward stroke, splintering may occur on
the surface closest to the footplate.
• Use a fine tooth blade.
• Cut from the back surface of the workpiece
• To minimize splintering, clamp a piece of scrap wood or hardboard to
both sides of the workpiece and saw through this assembly.
b) cUtting Metals
• Use a fine tooth blade for metal.
• Be aware that sawing metal will take much more time than sawing
wood.
• When cutting thin metal, clamp a piece of scrap wood to the back
surface of the workpiece and cut through this assembly.
• Apply a thin film of oil along the intended line of cut for easier
operation and longer blade life. For cutting aluminum, kerosene is
preferred.
3. plUnge cUtting (FigURe 5)
The reciprocating saw can be used to make plunge cuts into softer
materials without a starting hole. Plunge cutting is useful and time-
saving in making rough openings in softer materials. It is not necessary
to drill a hole for an inside or pocket cut.
• Mark the line to be cut clearly on the workpiece.
• Set the saw with one edge of the footplate firmly against the material.
• Place the tip of the blade (not running) on the line to be cut.
• Place the saw so that the blade clears the work
• Squeeze the switch trigger and carefully engage the moving saw
blade into the material.
• After the blade penetrates through the workpiece, continuous sawing
along the marked outline.
In thick materials and hard materials, plunge cutting should not be
attempted.
