Listening to your system
Using Stream Direct
Use the Stream Direct modes when you want
to hear the truest possible reproduction of a
source. All unnecessary signal processing is
bypassed.

DIRECT
AUDIO
While listening to a source, press AUTO/
DIRECT to select Stream Direct mode.
• AUTO SURROUND – See Auto playback on
page 33.
• DIRECT – Sources are heard according to
the settings made in the Surround Setup
(speaker setting, channel level, speaker
distance), as well as with dual mono
1
settings.
You will hear sources according
to the number of channels in the signal.
• PURE DIRECT – Analog and PCM sources
are heard without any digital processing.
Using the Sound Retriever
When audio data is removed during the
compression process, sound quality often
suffers from an uneven sound image. The
Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP
technology that helps bring CD quality sound
back to compressed 2-channel audio by
restoring sound pressure and smoothing
jagged artifacts left over after compression.

Note
1 In the DIRECT mode, Phase Control, Acoustic Calibration EQ, Sound Delay, Auto Delay, LFE Attenuate and Center image
functions are available.
2 There are cases where a brief noise is heard before playback of sources other than PCM. Please select AUTO SURROUND or
DIRECT if this is a problem.
3 The Sound Retriever is only applicable to 2-channel sources.
4 You can't use Acoustic Calibration EQ with MULTI IN or Stream Direct mode and it has no effect with headphones.

Using surround back channel
processing
• Default setting: SB CH ON
You can have the receiver automatically use 6.1
or 7.1 decoding for 6.1 encoded sources (for
example, Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES), or you
can choose to always use 6.1 or 7.1 decoding
3
(for example, with 5.1 encoded material). With
5.1 encoded sources, a surround back channel
will be generated, but the material may sound
better in the 5.1 format for which it was
originally encoded (in which case, you can
simply switch surround back channel
processing off).
