Section 5: Troubleshooting

Symptom
Recoil will not pull out or is
difficult to pull
Engine will not start

Engine lacks power or is not
running smoothly

Owner's Manual for Chipper/Shredder
Possible Cause
Remove un-process material from the chipper chute and shredder hopper and
remove any built-up debris in the discharge opening.
There may be an oil compression lock in the cylinder. Remove the spark plug, hold a
rag over the spark plug hole and pull the recoil cord several times to blow out any oil
in the cylinder. Wipe off the spark plug and reinstall.
The recoil may be broken or jammed. Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Check the oil and gas level.
Verify the fuel shut-off is in the ON position.
Verify spark plug wire is attached. Attach if necessary.
Air filter dirty. Change air filter following the procedure in the Engine Owner's Manual.
Old fuel. Change fuel if necessary. Use a fuel stabilizer for fuel not used longer than
one month.
Check the throttle and choke settings, adjustment and travel.
Spark plug may be dirty or cracked. Change spark plug if necessary. If spark plug is
oily, remove spark plug, hold a rag over the plug hole and pull the recoil cord several
times to blow out any oil in the cylinder, then wipe off the plug and reinstall. Never use
a cracked spark plug as serious damage could result.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Verify choke lever is fully in the run position.
Verify throttle lever is fully in the fast position.
Air filter dirty. Change air filter following the procedure in the Engine Owner's Manual.
Spark plug may be dirty or cracked. Change spark plug if necessary. If spark plug is
oily, remove spark plug, hold a rag over the plug hole and pull the recoil cord several
times to blow out any oil in the cylinder, then wipe off the plug and reinstall. Never use
a cracked spark plug as serious damage could result.
Old fuel. Change fuel if necessary. Use a fuel stabilizer for fuel not used longer than
one month.
Engine oil dirty. Change engine oil if necessary.
Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris. Clean as needed.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
