Maintenance

Chipper Knife Sharpening

Never attempt to sharpen the chipper knife free-
hand. Take the knife to a machine shop for proper
sharpening.
See
Figure
4-8. The 45° cutting angle (D) must be
maintained for proper performance.
Excessive heat generated during the sharpening
process will damage knives and weaken the metal.
The number of times a knife can be sharpened is
determined by how much material needs to be
taken off to sharpen or to compensate for dents or
gouges.

Cutting Angle
A new chipper knife has a 5/16 in (8 mm) measure-
ment (C) between the short side bevel edge (B)
and the knife mounting holes (A).
The knife should never be sharpened to the extent
that more than 3/32 in (2 mm) is removed from the
original 5/16 in (8 mm) measurement.
Once the distance between the knife mounting
hole and short side bevel edge falls below 7 /32 in
(5 mm) or if you are unable to remove dents or
gouges with these guidelines, replace the knife.
Replace the knife if dents or gouges can not be
removed from the knife
