Requirement for selecting speaker cords (one pair)
In order to output high-quality sound signals, use speaker cords of the minimum necessary
length that are treated with either of the following two fittings at their ends:
With cable cores (less than 4.5 mm (3/16 in) in diameter) bared by stripping the jacket to
10 mm (13/32 in) from each + and - end
The bare cable core may become oxidized over time. In this case, reconnect the speaker
cords after stripping the jacket to expose a fresh segment of cable core at each end. This
will ensure that you can enjoy better sound.
With spade plugs (more than 8 mm (11/32 in) in inner diameter, and less than 12 mm
(1/2 in) in outer diameter)
Connecting the AC power cord
Connect the AC power cord (supplied) to AC INLET on the rear panel of this unit, and
then connect the plug to a wall outlet.
A several space is left between the plug and the rear panel even when the power cord
(mains lead) is inserted firmly. The cord is supposed be connected this way. This is not
malfunction.

Connect the AC power cord from the subwoofer to a wall outlet.
Do not use AC OUTLET on the amplifier.
Firmly connect the AC power cords from the subwoofer and from your amplifier to a
wall outlet.
Make sure that power to the subwoofer is turned off before you connect or disconnect
any power cord.
If you have any questions or problems concerning your subwoofer that are not covered in
these Operating Instructions, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Listening to Sound
First, turn down the volume of the amplifier. It is recommended that you turn the volume
down to minimum before playing the program source.

Turn on the amplifier and select the program source.

Set POWER on the subwoofer to ON/STANDBY.
The subwoofer turns on and the POWER indicator lights up in green.

Play the program source.
Adjust the VOLUME control on the amplifier so that you can listen to the sound from
the front speakers at your preferred leve. If it is distorted, the sound from the subwoofer
will also be distorted.
To automatically turn the power on/off
— Auto power-on/off function
When the subwoofer is on (i.e., the POWER indicator lights up green) and there is no
signal input for a few minutes, the POWER indicator changes to red and the subwoofer
enters power-saving mode. While in this mode and a signal is input to the subwoofer, the
subwoofer automatically turns on (auto power-on/off function). To turn this feature off, set
POWER SAVE on the rear panel to OFF.

Notes
Never set the amplifier's tone controls (BASS, TREBLE, etc.) or the equalizer output to a
high level, or continuously play test discs that contain 20 Hz to 50 Hz sine-curve
recordings or other special sounds (such as the bass sound of electronic musical
instruments or popping noises from an analog turntable) at a high level. These actions
may cause damage to the speakers. When a special disc containing abnormally enhanced
bass is played, noise may be output in addition to the original sound. In such a case,
decrease the sound level.
If you turn down the volume level of the amplifier too low, the auto power-on/off
function may activate, causing the subwoofer to enter power-saving mode.
Adjusting the Sound
You can adjust the sound of the subwoofer to suit the sound of your front speakers.
Reinforcing the bass provides a more powerful sound and gives you the impression of
actually being part of the scene.

Adjust the cut-off frequency.
Turn CUT OFF FREQ to match the reproduction frequencies of your front speakers. If
you use a large speaker, turn the dial counterclockwise. If you use a small speaker, turn
the dial clockwise.

Adjust the volume level of the subwoofer.
LEVEL
Turn LEVEL so that you can hear the bass sound a little more than before. To increase
the volume, turn the dial clockwise. To decrease the volume, turn the dial
counterclockwise.

Adjust the ENCLOSURE TYPE.
ENCLOSURE TYPE
Select your preferred setting.
When CLOSED is selected, the woofer units (both front and rear) are driven. Tight bass
sound is output.
When Q-CONTROLLED PASSIVE RADIATOR is selected, the front woofer unit is
driven and the rear woofer unit functions as a passive radiator. Deep bass sound is
output.
When you change the setting of ENCLOSURE TYPE, the tone will change. The volume
may also seem to change.
When you change this setting, readjust the cut-off frequency and the volume level of the
subwoofer.

Adjust the phase polarity.
PHASE
Use PHASE to select the phase polarity. Play your favorite song and movie. Male vocal
tunes and voices containing bass sounds are most suitable for adjustment. Turn the
volume of the front speakers to a normal level.
Select the polarity with which you can hear the lowest part of male vocals or voices.

Repeat steps 1 to 4 to adjust for your preference.
Once you have adjusted the subwoofer to the settings you desire, use the VOLUME
control on the amplifier to adjust the volume of the subwoofer with that of the other
speakers. You don't need to adjust the subwoofer settings when you change the volume
level of the amplifier.
Notes
Do not turn LEVEL to maximum. Doing so may weaken the bass sound. Moreover,
extraneous noise may be heard.
Selecting NORMAL or REVERSE with PHASE reverses the polarity and may provide
better bass reproduction in certain listening environments (depending on the type of
front speakers, the position of the subwoofer and the adjustment of the cut-off
frequency). It may also change the expanse and tightness of sound, and affect the feeling
of the sound field. Select the setting that provides the sound you prefer when listening in
your normal listening position.
