3 Applications
The active subwoofer system PSUB-18L is equipped
with a high-quality 46 cm (18") bass speaker (long
excursion cone) and is designed as a subwoofer com-
plement to full-range speakers in PA systems . The
subwoofer system PSUB-18L is particularly suited
as a professional complement to the speaker array
L-RAY/1000 . The subwoofer system is also ideally
suited for the speaker systems of the series PAB-400,
PA-500 and PAB-600 .
The active system is equipped with a 400 W
power amplifier (800 W max .) and an adjustable low
pass filter . The subwoofer is protected by a 25 Hz
subsonic filter and various protective circuits . By
means of the level control and the phase reversal
switch, the PSUB-18L can be adapted to the main
speakers in an optimum way .
4 Setting-up and Connection
Prior to making or changing any connections, switch
off the active system and the units to be connected .
1) Place the PSUB-18L on the floor as desired . It is
possible to place a speaker system as a top part
at a certain distance above the active system:
Insert an adapter for speaker stands (e . g . from
the PAST series) into the stand sleeve on the upper
side of the active system and place the speaker
system on top .
2) Connect the signal source (e . g . preamplifier,
mixer) to the XLR jack INPUT (6) .
3) At the XLR jack OUTPUT (7), the input signal fed
through is available . This jack allows to connect
e . g . the amplifier for the main speakers .
4) Finally connect the supplied mains cable to the
mains jack (10) and to a socket (230 V / 50 Hz) .
5 Operation
All adjustments and sound evaluations can only be
made in connection with the main speakers . The
sound should be evaluated at the final place of hear-
ing where a second person at the subwoofer should
be instructed to perform an optimum adjustment .
CAUTION Never adjust a very high volume .
Permanent high volumes may
damage your hearing! The human
ear will get accustomed to high
volumes which do not seem to be that high any
more after some time . Therefore, do not further
increase a high volume after getting used to it .
1) Adjust the upper crossover frequency of the
subwoofer with the control HIGH CUT (3) . As a
guidance, use the lower crossover frequency of
the main speakers .
2) Switch on the connected signal source .
3) Prior to initial operation of the subwoofer, turn
the control LEVEL (1) to the left stop (position
"− ∞") so that the adjustment of the volume is
not too high at the beginning . Then switch on
the subwoofer with the mains switch POWER
(8) . The mains switch and the power indicator
ACTIVE (4) light up .
4) Use the control LEVEL to adjust the volume ratio
of the subwoofer to the main speakers . Thus, it is
possible to obtain a natural bass reproduction or a
bass reproduction which is deliberately amplified .
When the volume is too high, the indicator
LIMIT (5) will light up to indicate that the volume
has exceeded the maximum value and the inte-
grated volume limiter has been activated . When
the indicator LIMIT lights up permanently, turn
back the control LEVEL accordingly .
5) When multiple speaker systems are set up, the
phases of the sound waves provided by the sys-
tems may differ which may result in undesired
attenuation of certain frequencies . To compen-
sate this, the PSUB-18L is equipped with a phase
reversal switch . Test both positions of the but-
ton PHASE (2) – pressed (phase reversed) or not
pressed (phase not reversed) – and choose the
position offering the best bass reproduction .
6) After operation, switch off the active system with
the POWER switch .
