higher loads may be controlled by employing the becket
and consequently attaining a 6:1 mechanical advantage
(figure 9b).
Figure 10: RESCUE
Lowering from an anchor: follow instructions on figure
8a and 8b. Double person load on working line (Figure
10a): The rescuer fastens the descender to his harness
and connects the injured person by means of an
additional connecting element. Simultaneous descent
of the rescuer and the victim on separate lines (Figure
10b): The rescuer gradually pulls the victims handle by
means of a cordelette as he/she descends so that the
victim's descent is initiated and kept constant. Be
mutually secured. For a smooth descent, higher tension
of the victim's free rope is recommended. WARNINGS:
Rescue and evacuation manoeuvres may only be
practiced by persons specifically trained for the purpose.
For all rescue manoeuvres the use of gloves is
recommended. To avoid loss of control and rope
damage (heat), lower descent speeds are advisable
during rescue operations.
Figure 11: PARALLEL DESCENDERS DESCENT
Parallel descenders technique may be adopted in cases
were risk assessment discloses more established
methods as unsafe. Both single person (11a) and
double person (11b) loads are applicable. With light
loads consider that force on each descender is halved.
Figure 12: BELAYING
All versions of Sirius with single dynamic ropes (EN
892) within the specified diameter range are suitable for
lead climbing. Always hold the free end of the rope! Pay
the rope out by making a bight in the free end and
pressing on the cam to open it with one hand while
pulling the rope out of the descender with the other (fig.
12a). Take the rope in by pulling it through the descender
in reversed direction (fig 12b). To lower a climber, follow
procedures as during descent. The braking effect is
dependent on rope diameter, rope slipperiness, etc.
Familiarize yourself with the braking effect before use.
