PUROFILL
Chapter 3 – Installation instructions / operation

3.1 Principle of deionization of water by use of ion-exchange resins

The PUROFILL filter cartridge contains ion-
exchange mixed bed resin beads for the total
Tap water
DI-water
deionization of water. These ion-exchange resin
beads absorb the salts (ions) dissolved in the
water while the water flows through the so-called
resin bed.
When flowing through the cartridge, deionized
water (demineralized water, DI-water) is produced,
whereby an electrical conductivity of <0.1 μS/cm
can be achieved.
As the saturation of the ion-exchange resin
increases, salts break through the resin bed from
a certain point, which increases the electrical
conductivity. Beginning from an electrical
conductivity of 10 μS/cm, the ion-exchange resin
is considered to be exhausted and should be
replaced for further operation of the filter cartridge.
A defined contact time of the water with the ion-exchange resin beads is necessary for an ideal
deionization result. For this reason, the flow rate specified in the technical data should always be
observed.
