4.2 | Removal

NOTE!
Risk of damage!
If the grip is glued to the switch unit, you must carefully cut it away with a
utility knife.
Remove the instrument housing from the handlebar so that it is not
scratched or damaged while the grips are being removed or fitted. Brake
cleaner can dissolve sponge or foam rubber grips and is therefore not sui-
table. Please only use a mild cleaning agent for these types of grips.
If the grips still cannot be pulled off the handlebar after following the above advice, use an
open-ended wrench (size 24) to push them off from their inner edge. This technique works a lot
better than levering the grips off with a screwdriver, for example.
CAUTION!

Risk of injury!

If you do not intend to reuse the old grips, you can simply cut them length-
wise with a carpet knife.

First remove the bar ends of the original handlebar. For this
you will definitely need sufficient leverage, as the screw
connection is often stuck tight. It is best to unscrew cross-head
screws with an impact driver. If you do not have one, a couple
of sharp taps with a hammer on a cross-head screwdriver
that fits the screw exactly and then applying a constant force
should help to loosen the screw.
Then you need to remove the rubber grips. A professional
would blow compressed air between the rubber and the hand-
lebar. At home you can just as well squirt a little dishwashing
liquid or brake cleaner (please no oil, petrol or other fuels!)
under the grip using a disposable syringe.
