AT-6 TEXAN
During the Second World War, the rugged North
American T-6 "Texan" became an aviation legend.
Fledgling pilots discovered that the transition from
slow primary trainers to the growling T-6was a chal-
lenge indeed. Mastery of the art of flying the T-6pro-
vided the vital training that enabled aspiring pilots to
transition relatively easily into the sleek "Mustangs"
and "Corsairs." At the height of the war, the T-6 was in
service with the Army Air Corps, United States Navy,
and the Royal Air Force.
The T-6 was an all-metal, low-wing monoplane that
was derived from the earlier BC-I trainer. Powered by a
600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney radial engine, the air-
craft was capable of speeds in excess of 200 miles per
hour. The landing gear was retractable, and a fixed
forward-firing .30 caliber machine gun introduced
young pilots to the intricacies of aerial gunnery.Due to
the urgent needfor "Texans", North American Aviation
established assembly lines in Inglewood, California
and Dallas,Texas.T-6variants were also manufactured
by Noorduyn in Canada.
The life of the T-6 did not end with the cessation
World War II. T-6's remained in service with Navy, Air
Force, and Air Guard units for many years. Today,many
T-6's and SNJ's remain, and they have become quite
popular with private owners throughout the world.
