INSTRUMENT OPERATION - Insert the probe into the liquid being measured, the instrument
reading will take a few seconds to stabilise. The correct milk temperature for latte etc. is
indicated in the red zone.
CALIBRATION ADJUSTMENT - Caution: Do not adjust unless certain the instrument is out
of specification. Compare against a Reference thermometer/Ice Bath. Using the calibration
spanner, twist the lock-nut whilst holding the dial to correct any error.
YOU WILL REQUIRE:
• Lock-nut calibration spanner (supplied)
• Reference thermometer (preferably with a current UKAS calibration certificate)
• Liquid/solution (preferably left to acclimatise to room temperature) or, if you wish to compare
at 0 °C - an Ice Bath. (visit etiltd.com/icebath)
Adjustment of the stem thermometer should only be carried out against a known source,
such as a calibrated thermometer, or properly generated Ice Bath.
Calibration with the calibration spanner (supplied) should be carried out with the
thermometer removed from the liquid or solution.
Place the probe of the dial thermometer and Reference thermometer of known accuracy
into the liquid/solution and note the temperature of both. Please note: if the Reference
thermometer has been calibrated by a UKAS Laboratory, there may be a tolerance or
inaccuracy for which you will need to make an allowance.
If using an Ice Bath, follow the correct procedure to make a 0 °C Ice Bath, then ensure the
probe is properly inserted into the bath.
Note the temperature on the calibrated thermometer and wait for the dial thermometer to
reach full temperature, then check to see if there is any difference between the temperatures
before removing the dial thermometer from the liquid.
If using an Ice Bath, note the difference between the dial thermometer and 0 °C.
Ensure the dial thermometer has stabilised to room temperature before placing the
calibration spanner over the probe. Slide it up the stem until it locates on the underside of the
dial, fitting against the nut.
Firmly hold the dial and twist the nut clockwise or counter clockwise to adjust for the error.
If there is more than a 10 °C error, adjust by this amount and retest.
Once you have adjusted the dial thermometer, leave for five minutes before comparing with
the Reference thermometer or Ice Bath.
Should you have any doubts about the thermometer's accuracy, or have problems with the
above procedure, please contact the ETI Service Department on 01903 202151.
