1 Operating Elements and Connections

1 Pointer instrument for indicating any metal detected
2 Function switch MODE for selecting the operating
mode and OFF switch
3 Control GROUND for adjusting the metal detector
to the composition of the ground
4 LOW BATT battery indication; if it lights up perma-
nently during operation, the batteries are too weak
and must be replaced

sensitivity
6 Control DISCRIMINATION for adjusting the filter to
distinguish metals
7 Control TUNING for fine-tuning the reference ad-
justment
8 Volume control for the audio signal
9 Speaker for the audio signal; when using the head-
phone jack (11), the speaker will be switched off
10 Reference button for resetting the pointer
11 3.5 mm jack for connecting stereo headphones or
earphones
12 Arm rest
13 Locking screw for the arm rest

16 Telescopic handle
17 Locking screw for adjusting the angle of the search
coil
18 Search coil
19 Battery compartment covers

2 Safety Notes

This unit corresponds to the directive for electromag-
netic compatibility 89/336/EEC.
The search coil (18) is humidity-proof, however, the
control element (figs. 1 and 3) is not. When using the
unit in the rain, protect it correspondingly. Also pro-
tect the unit against extreme temperatures (admissi-
ble ambient temperature range 0 – 40 °C).
For cleaning the control element, only use a dry, soft
cloth. For cleaning the search coil and the handle,
also a damp cloth may be used, however, without
any aggressive detergents or chemicals.
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability for
any resulting personal damage or material damage
will be accepted if the unit is used for other purposes
than originally intended, if it is not correctly connect-
ed, operated, or not repaired in an expert way.
If the unit is to be put out of operation de-
finitively, take it to a local recycling plant for
a disposal which is not harmful to the envi-
ronment.
3 Application
The GMD-20 serves for detecting metal objects in the
ground. The unit operates in the low-frequency range
and is able to distinguish between ferrous and non-
ferrous metals. Detection of a metal object will be in-
dicated by the pointer instrument and also by an audio
signal in three different tones which will sound either
via the integrated speaker or via optional headphones.
The unit offers three operating modes differing in the
distinction between metals.
4 Operation
4.1 Mounting
1) Release the nut opposite the locking screw (17)
and remove the screw.
2) Insert the lower part (16) of the handle into the sup-
port of the search coil and adjust it in such a way
that the locking screw may be inserted through the
support and the handle.
3) Insert the locking screw through the support and
the handle and tighten it with the nut on the oppo-
site side.
4) Wind the cable of the search coil around the handle
and connect the plug (14) to the jack below the indi-
cating instrument as shown in fig. 2. Wind the cable
loosely and leave it slack so that the length of the
handle and the angle of the search coil may be
adjusted later.
5) Release the locking screw (13) for the arm rest
(12). Insert the arm rest to the stop and retighten
the screw.
4.2 Adjusting the angle of the search coil and
the length of the handle
1) Release the locking screw (17) and adjust the
angle of the search coil (18) in such a way that the
coil may be held parallel to the ground. Do not bend
or stretch the connection cable. Then retighten the
screw.
2) Release the locking nut (15) by turning it in the di-
rection of the brighter arrowhead in fig. 2. Adjust the
desired length of the handle by pulling out or pu-
shing in its lower part (16). Then retighten the nut.
4.3 Inserting and checking the batteries
1) Open the two battery compartment covers (19) on
the rear side of the control element by sliding them
outwards as indicated in fig. 3.
2) Insert two 9 V batteries of the same type with the
positive and negative connections as indicated in
the battery compartments. Make sure that the bat-
tery is placed on top of the ribbon which will facili-
tate later removal.
3) Close the battery compartment covers.
When setting the function switch (2) from position VLF
to position OFF, the battery indication LOW BATT (4)
will shortly light up. If it fails to light up in this case or if
