Charging the Battery
The internal rechargeable batteries must be fully charged before the instrument is used for the first time. In order
to avoid memory-effects and to obtain the longest possible battery life, the batteries should be always fully
charged and almost completely discharged.
SMS-300 Series instruments can also be operated while charging the battery. The charging process will then be
suspended. SMS-200 Series stroboscopes must be fully recharged before use.
Use only the charger included in the delivery for battery charging. Other chargers may cause
permanent damages to the batteries.
The charger connector can be found on the back side of the instrument (Series SMS-300 / DT-3xx) or at the
bottom end of the hand grip (SMS-200 / DT72X).
The normal durability of the battery is approximately 300 charging cycles. If the battery life per cycle is
shortening, the battery should be replaced.
Replacing the Battery
The batteries of SMS-300B stroboscopes can be replaced. Switch off the stroboscope and remove the charger.
First remove the lower hand grip, then loosen the cover on the bottom side of the instrument. Pull out the battery
carrier carefully and detach the connector. Remove the battery bracket to replace the battery package. After
reattaching the carrier and connecting the battery with the instrument, the battery carrier can be inserted
carefully back into place, and the cover screwed up.
Before using the stroboscope the first time after the battery replacement, the batteries have to be fully
recharged.
The internal batteries of SMS-200 stroboscopes must be replaced by authorized service personal.
Replacing the Flash Tube
The durability of Xenon flash tubes is approximately 100 mio Flashes (approx. 150h @ 10,000FPM). For replacing
the flash tube, please follow these directions:
Do not touch the glass of the flash tube directly; its contamination may considerably shorten
the battery life. The tube glass is very fragile. Please use a cloth when installing or removing it.
Switch off the stroboscope, disconnect from the external power supply and wait approx. 5 minutes until the
instrument and the flash tubes have cooled down. Then loosen the cross-head screws on the glass cover,
remove the glass cover and for SMS-300 Stroboscopes also the reflector.
For SMS-200 stroboscopes remove the used flash tube by pulling them out carefully. In doing so use a cloth to
protect your hands from insury. Insert the new flash tube straight into the electrical outlet using a cloth.
For SMS-300 stroboscopes, first of all screw the empty fixing tool onto the receptacle of the Xenon tube and pull
out the tube with its help. Apply the new Xenon tube into the fixing tool and using the tool insert it into the
receptacle. Remove the fixing tool and attach the reflector and the glass cover.
Troubleshooting
No display:
Check the state of battery charge. Connect the adaptor and check the electric connection.
Flash tube does not work:
Check the operation mode. When the battery voltage is too low, "LLLLL" will be shown on the display,
or the Low-Batt display will flash. Fully recharge the battery.
When a valid frequence value is displayed, check how long the flash tube has already been used and
replace it when necessary (see descriptions in "Replacing the Flash Tube").
