1 Demonstrating the vibratory nature of an
This experiment requires a transmitter and a receiver. Connect the transmitter to the power
supply and the receiver, which is placed on the axis of the transmitter to the vertical input of
an oscilloscope (adjustment of the level: 100 mV/div and a scan time of: 5 µs/div). The
On/Off switch is placed in the On position and the Continuous – Bursts reversing switch in
Continuous. Adjust the transmitter's adjustment button to obtain the maximum amplitude of
the signal detected by the receiver.
We obtain an almost sinusoidal signal. The measurement of the length corresponding to one
period on the screen gives the duration of the period from which the frequency of the
ultrasound wave is deduced. We will note that the signal which powers the transmitter is a
square wave and of a greater amplitude (connect the signal output to the second vertical
output of the oscilloscope, level: 5 V/div).
2 Measuring the velocity of an ultrasound wave
2.1 Equipment
The experiment requires all components of the assembly. The transmitter and the two
receivers are placed on the rails: The transmitter in its slot on the left and the receivers A
and B in the guide rails are positioned in such a way that their pointers are at the zero
markings. Connect the transmitter to the power supply and the receivers to the vertical inputs
of a dual-trace oscilloscope (level on each channel: 100 mV/div and a scan time of: 1
ms/div).
2.2 The experiment
The On/Off button is placed in the On position and the Continuous – Bursts reversing switch
in Bursts. The Long bursts – Short bursts reversing switch is placed in the Long bursts
position. The two receivers are at the start at the same distance from the receiver.
Adjust the frequency adjustment button of the transmitter to obtain maximum amplitude of
bursts detected by the two receivers on the oscilloscope screen.
The oscilloscope screen looks like the diagram opposite.
The bursts are received at regular intervals. They can almost be superimposed by a vertical
translation of the curves.
