Always wear eye protection when operating or
performing maintenance on this tool.
Always turn off the air supply and disconnect the air
supply hose before installing, removing or adjusting
any accessory on this tool or before performing any
maintenance on this tool.
LUBRICATION
Each time a Series 5020 or 5040 Torque Control
Impactool is disassembled for maintenance and repair or
replacement of parts, lubricate the tool as follows:
1. Using Ingersoll–Rand No. 100 Grease, coat only the
jaws of the Hammer (66) and the jaws of the Anvil
(75 or 79). Apply a thin film of No. 100 Grease to the
pilot of the Torsion Bar (86) or the Planet Gear Frame
Pilot (62) and place a small amount in the cam
grooves at the jaw end of the Hammer and on the
Hammer Spring Thrust Bearing Balls (63).
Use grease sparingly. Excessive lubrication will
retard the action of the tool.
2. Lubricate the gearing with Ingersoll–Rand No. 28
Grease.
3. Use Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 Oil for lubricating the
motor. Inject approximately 1 to 2 cc into the air inlet
before attaching the air hose. Remove the Oil
Chamber Plug (7) and fill the oil chamber.
DISASSEMBLY
General Instructions
1. Do not disassemble the tool any further than
necessary to replace or repair damaged parts.
2. Whenever grasping a tool or part in a vise, always use
leather–covered or copper–covered vise jaws to
protect the surface of the part and help prevent
distortion. This is particularly true of threaded
members and housings.
3. Do not remove any part which is a press fit in or on a
subassembly unless the removal of that part is
necessary for repairs or replacement.
4. Do not disassemble the tool unless you have a
complete set of new gaskets and O–rings for
replacement.
Disassembly of the Impactool
1. Grasp the handle of the Impactool in a vise with the
square drive or Torsion Bar upward.

2. Unscrew and remove the three Hammer Case Cap
Screws (73) and Lock Washers (74).
3. Grasp the Quick Change Anvil Assembly or
Adjustable Torsion Bar and the Hammer Case (68)
and lift it off the Gear Case (52) over the Hammer
(66).
Lift the assembly carefully to prevent the Trip
Valve Plunger (53) and Spring (55) from popping
out of position and becoming lost.
4. For models 5020TDQ or 5040TDQ
remove the Planet Gear Frame Pilot (62) if it
remained in the shaft of the Planet Gear Frame (56).
5. Pull the Hammer (66) and gear train assembly out of
the Gear Case (52).
1. Using finger pressure or a bearing puller, if necessary,
pull the Gear Frame Thrust Bearing (60) off the hub
of the Planet Gear Frame (56).
2. On the table of an arbor press, position the Hammer
(66), jaw end downward, on a sleeve or piece of
tubing that has clearance for the shaft of the Planet
Gear Frame.
3. Press the Planet Gear Frame into the Hammer against
the pressure of the Hammer Spring (65) until the top
face of the Hammer Spring Thrust Bearing Race (64)
is below the two small diametrically opposite holes in
the hammer wall.
4. Insert the ends of the No. 4U–30B Hammer Assembly
Tool into the two small holes and gradually release
the press pressure on the Gear Frame. The Assembly
Tool locks the Race within the Hammer.
5. Remove the assembly from the press and dump the
Hammer Spring Thrust Bearing Balls (63) into a
container.
6. Replace the assembly on the arbor press as before and
press on the Gear Frame until the two Cam Balls (67)
drop from the jaw end of the Hammer.
7. Release the grip on the Assembly Tool, allowing the
ends to spring out of engagement with the Hammer
and, slowly release the press pressure on the Gear
Frame.
Do not reverse this procedure by removing the
assembly from the press and then springing the
Assembly Tool from the Hammer, as the Hammer
Spring will eject the Gear Frame with considerable
force.
