PICKLEBALL RULES
Abbreviated
rules
S
—The serve must be hit underhand, after the ball is dropped from the hand. The player can elect to hit ball either before or after
ervice
the ball bounces off the ground. The paddle must contact the ball below waist level. The serve is made diagonally across the court and
must clear the non-volley zone (see 'Non-Volley Zone' below). Only one serve attempt is allowed per rally, and serves that touch the net
but continue on to land in the service box are played.

—After a serve, the receiving player must let the ball bounce in the service box before hitting the ball. The serving

team must also let the returned ball bounce before hitting it. After the ball has bounced on both sides of the court players may elect to
either volley the ball out of the air or hit it after one bounce. The double bounce rule prevents the serving team from gaining an advantage
at the beginning of each rally.

—The 7-foot zone on both sides of the net is called the non-volley zone. Players are prevented from executing smashes
from within the zone. When volleying the ball, the player may not step on or over the line. It is also a fault if players' momenta, after a
volley, carries them into the non-volley zone. Players may be in the non-volley zone at any other time.
S
—Both players on the serving team are allowed to serve before a side out, and a team scores points only when serving. A game is
coring
played to eleven points and a team must win by two points. Rallies are lost by failing to return the ball in bounds to the opponents' court
before the second bounce, stepping into the non-volley zone when volleying the ball, or by violating the double-bounce rule. The hand is
considered an extension of the paddle. The player loses the rally if the ball hits any other part of their body or clothing.
