B. SUP PRATICE : THE BASIC
PADDLING AND NAVIGATING
-
Stannd on the paddle: Kneel (shoulder width for balance). Look far ahead, get
up one leg after the other or both at the same time from side to side of the
board's carrying handle (usually in the middle of the board).
-
Paddle direction: The paddle must be held in the correct direction; paddle
blade is angled forward (not backward) so that the paddle is always vertical in
the water when paddling for better efficiency.
-
Position: Legs relaxed, slightly bent, the pelvis must play a role of shock
absorber. Hold the handle of the paddle in the palm of your hand then place the
other hand on the tube. The spacing of your hands should be equivalent to the
width of your shoulders.
-
Movement: arms outstretched, reach the contact with water by leaning your
body forward. Hand on the handle, push forward and bring back the paddle
towards yourself (leverage effect) with your other hand. To be effective, the
rowing movement must end at your feet.
Paddle straight by performing 4-6 strokes on each side to avoid the "row effect"
-
(= rotation of the board).
