Prior to use, set the interceptor's internal draw-off sleeve approximately 1/8" above
the static water line. As a skim of oil accumulates, it will automatically drain through
the draw-off sleeve to the storage tank.
OI-ST, OI-500, OI-600, OI-700, and WO-500 Series interceptors are supplied with
a stainless steel flow control plate, located just inside the interceptor inlet. The
flow control must be in place for the interceptor to maintain proper operation and
efficiency.
Oil interceptors and storage tanks must be properly vented to prevent the accumu-
lation of fumes, which can create a hazardous condition. Vent the two 2" connec-
tions on the side of the interceptor to the atmosphere, with one terminated approx-
imately 12" above the other. Fixtures serviced and the inlet and discharge piping
should be vented as required by local code.
Pipe connections are either no hub or IPS. Make no hub connections with a suit-
able no hub or transition coupling (by others); IPS connections are made with an
IPS nipple (by others) corresponding to the interceptor's connection size.
Maintenance
To maintain efficiency, oil interceptors should be periodically inspected and kept
free of significant accumulations of oil and debris. The frequency of inspection is
dependent upon specific application conditions; at a minimum, inspections should
be performed annually.
To inspect the interceptor, remove the bolt(s) securing the top cover and remove the
cover. Evacuate the interceptor completely and remove any debris that may have
accumulated at the bottom of the interceptor. Make sure the inlet, outlet and draw-
off are free of obstructions, and check the vertical position of the draw-off sleeve
relative to the static water line. Prior to replacing the cover, inspect the cover gasket
for damage or potential leak points.
The storage tank should be serviced periodically, depending upon the tank capacity
and volume of separated oil. Accumulated oil should be removed as required and
recycled in a manner suitable to local authorities.
Extensions
An interceptor extension is used to effectively lower the level of an interceptor's
inlet and outlet, enabling piping connections further below grade. Extensions are
commonly required for recessed interceptor installations to accommodate the fall in
long piping runs, or ensure an interceptor's static water line remains below the local
frost line.
