General
Interceptors are designed to separate unwanted substances from wastewater
streams, prior to discharge into public sewer systems. Plumbing codes require oil
interceptors to be installed on drainage lines in vehicle service, run-off, and other
areas where wastewater is likely to contain petroleum-based products. Oil inter-
ceptors function to separate oily substances from wastewater streams, for storage
and eventual recycling.
Watts hydro-mechanical oil interceptors facilitate separation by slowing and
extending the wastewater flow path. As effluent passes through an interceptor,
lighter than water oily substances are isolated above the static water line. As oil
accumulates, it is drawn off from the interceptor to a separate storage tank.

The separated oil is automatically drawn off to an accompanying storage tank.
- Page 5 Sizing OI-ST, OI-500, OI-600, OI-700, and WO-500 Series interceptors are sized by flow rate. For indoor areas, the flow rate can be calculated by adding the maximum flows from potential water sources, usually wall hydrants or interior hose bibs. For outdoor areas exposed to rainfall, flow rates should be derived from the square footage of the area served, and local rainfall rates.
- Page 6 Prior to use, set the interceptor’s internal draw-off sleeve approximately 1/8" above the static water line. As a skim of oil accumulates, it will automatically drain through the draw-off sleeve to the storage tank. OI-ST, OI-500, OI-600, OI-700, and WO-500 Series interceptors are supplied with a stainless steel flow control plate, located just inside the interceptor inlet.
