5.3 - Troubleshooting chart
This chart shows the most common problems and their solutions.
SYMPTOM
The voltage does not rise to a
set value
High voltage uncontrollable with - Incorrect voltage at sensing terminals.
the adjustment potentiometer
High voltage controllable with
the adjustment potentiometer
Low voltage controllable with
the adjustment potentiometer
Unsatifactory regulation.
PROBABLE CAUSES
- No residual or polarity reversed between the
field output and the exciter input.
- Desenergizing switch or contact open.
- The speed (frequency) is below the rated value. - Adjust the speed frequency.
- Voltage incorrect at sensing terminals
- Connections broken between the regulator and
the exciter.
- Alternator overloaded or in short circuit.
- Optional external voltage potentiometer
incorrectly connected.
- Faulty regulator.
- Fault in exciter or rotating diode bridge.
- Voltage potentiometer short circuited.
- Faulty regulator.
- Voltage potentiometer P3 too high adjusted.
- External voltage potentiometer incorrect (<1000 - Check its value.
ohms)
- Regulator sensing incorrectly connected.
- Incorrect voltage at regulator sensing terminals
- Defective or unsuitable voltmeter
- Faulty regulator.
- Voltage potentiometer P3 too low adjusted.
- Speed (frequency) below rated value
- Incorrect voltage at sensing terminals.
- Defective or unsuitable voltmeter
- Voltmeter connected to a point other than the
sensing point (Voltage drop over the wiring.)
- Wave form distortion (non-linear load). The
regulator measures the average value and the
voltmeter the RMS value.
- Uneven load.
- Speed (frequency) is not at its rated value.
- Fault in exciter or rotating diode bridge.
- Faulty regulator.
SOLUTIONS
- Field flashing is necessary.
- Close it.
- Check the wiring.
- Check the wiring.
- Eliminate the short circuit or the load.
- See wiring diagram.
- Test it or replace it.
- Check the bridge or the exciter.
- Check the wiring.
- Check the wiring.
- Test it or replace it.
- Adjust P3.
- Check the wiring.
- Check sensing wiring.
- Check or replace.
- Test it or replace it.
- Adjust P3.
- Increase the speed (frequency).
- Check the wiring.
- Check or replace.
- Connected the voltmeter to the same
point as the sensing.
- Contact ACEO
- (adjust the phase viewed by the sensing)
- Adjust the speed frequency.
- Check diodes and exciter
- Test or replace.
