Selecting sanding mode
WARNING: NEVER attempt to operate the Mode Selector Switch (2) whilst the tool is running. This will
cause tool damage.
• To select a sanding mode, rotate the Mode Selector Switch (2) either clockwise or anti-clockwise
depending on the desired sanding mode. See the table below
Fixed Orbit Mode
Coarse sanding with high
material removal & buffing
See Mode Selector Switch
Image D
This operating mode achieves
highest material removal and is
recommended for working very
rough surfaces. This mode is
also recommended for buffing.
Free-Run Mode
Fine sanding with low
material removal
See Mode Selector Switch
Image E
This operating mode is
recommended for handling
sensitive surfaces as well as
for fine polishing. By varying
the application pressure,
the material removal can be
regulated.
Note: To determine the sanding mode the sander is currently set to, disconnect the tool from the power
supply, and attempt to turn the Hook and Loop Backing Pad by hand. If the pad is hard to turn and moves on
an eccentric orbit, Fixed Orbit Mode is selected. If the base turns easily around its axis, the sander is set to
Free-Run Mode.
Operation
WARNING: Always use adequate protective equipment, including eye protection, respiratory and hearing
protection, when working with this tool.
WARNING: DO NOT touch the moving Sanding Disc.
WARNING: NEVER allow the Sanding Disc to completely wear down before replacing it. Failure to observe
these precautionary measures can lead to damage to the Hook and Loop surfaces, resulting in Sanding Discs
failing to attach properly.
Note: Always use clamps to secure your workpiece to the workbench wherever possible.
Switching ON & OFF
WARNING: DO NOT switch the tool on or off while under load, as this will greatly decrease the service life
of the ON/OFF Switch (4).
1. Connect the plug to the power supply
2. Hold the tool securely with both hands, one on the Main Handle (5), the other on the Front Grip (1) or
Auxiliary Handle (10) (if fitted), and make sure you have full control at all times
3. Ensure the Sanding Disc (9) is not in contact with the workpiece before powering on
Note: Always start and stop the tool when the Sanding Disc is not in contact with the workpiece.
4. Slide the ON/OFF Switch (4) forward until it locks ON and starts the tool
5. To stop, push down on the bottom of the ON/OFF Switch to disengage the switch to slide it into OFF
WARNING: ALWAYS lift the tool off of the workpiece before switching OFF.
WARNING: Always wait until the tool has stopped vibrating completely before putting it down. Always
disconnect from the power supply after use.
Adjusting tool speed
• This GMC sander features variable speed control that enables it to be used with a variety of accessories,
and to work on a variety of different materials, workpieces and objects
WARNING: Never fit any accessories to the Hook and Loop Backing Pad (8) that are not rated to the
maximum 'No load speed' of this device (see 'Specification').
1. To increase the speed, slide the Speed Control Dial (6) on to a higher number
2. To decrease the speed, slide the Speed Control Dial on to a lower number
• For sanding plastics or vinyl, or for polishing purposes, select a lower speed
• For sanding wood, select a higher speed
• If in doubt about selecting the correct speed setting for the task at hand, begin with a lower speed,
examine the results, then adjust to a higher speed setting if necessary
Sanding tips
• Clamp workpieces to the workbench wherever possible. Ensure that workpieces cannot move during work
• If the tool is connected to a vacuum dust extraction system, switch the extraction device on before
switching on the sander. Switch the sander OFF first, then the vacuum system
• Move the machine in a circular motion over the workpiece surface, applying even, moderate pressure until
you reach the desired surface finish
WARNING: Excessive pressure does not lead to a faster removal of material; it will, however, lead to
premature wear of the Sanding Disc, and may cause damage to the machine and workpiece. Both sanding
performance and quality depend mainly on the choice of the correct Sanding Discs.
• If there are still scratches on your workpiece after sanding, refer to 'Selecting the right grade of Sanding
Disc'
Sanding metal
WARNING: Some additional precautions have to be taken when sanding metal.
• ALWAYS connect the sander via a suitable RCD
• ALWAYS connect the sander to a suitable workshop dust extraction system
• Clean the tool thoroughly before using it to sand metal
WARNING: Hot metal particles and sparks could ignite residual wood dust. ALWAYS clean the tool
THOROUGHLY when switching from sanding wood to sanding metal, and vice versa.
• A Sanding Disc that was previously used for sanding metal should not be used on wood again. Residual
metal particles may lead to scratches, and damage the workpiece surface
Accessories
• A range of accessories, including punched hook and loop sanding discs with various grits, is available from
your GMC stockist. For your own safety, use only genuine GMC accessories. Spare parts can be purchased
from your GMC dealer or online at www.toolsparesonline.com
Maintenance
WARNING: Always disconnect from the power supply before carrying out any maintenance/cleaning.
• This tool is manufactured using-class leading components and makes use of the latest in intelligent
circuitry that protects the tool and its components. In normal use, it should provide a long working life
General inspection
• Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight. They may vibrate loose over time
• Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs should be carried out by
an authorised GMC service centre. This advice also applies to extension cords used with this tool
Lubrication
• Lubricate all moving parts with a suitable lubricant spray, at regular intervals
