Maintenance Procedures
Media Maintenance
Filter materials must be periodically replaced or cleaned. The various Fluval media have instructions for use
on the individual packaging. Actual lifespan of any type of media varies according to usage and the
individual characteristics of an aquarium.
Unplug filter. Gently lift large blue center handle to release the Aqua-Stop.
splashing when the Aqua-Stop handle is lifted, place a cloth around it prior to disengaging. Internal
pressure often causes an unavoidable spurt of water when the Aqua-Stop is released. The filter should be
removed in an upright position to eliminate the possibility of water splash.
***NOTE: Grip the filter canister body, not the Lift Lock Handles
installation to maintenance area. The Lift Lock Handles are designed to release the motor from the
f.12 f. 1 3
canister only.
They should not be used as grasping points to transport an intact filter. If used as
carrying handles, there is the possibility of the unit separating and water spilling.
The hose system is left intact at the installation point.
aquarium and clean with a Fluval Hose Cleaner Brush. Otherwise, it is not necessary to remove hose
installation.
Once the filter is in a waterproof place such as a sink, raise the Lift/Lock clamps to free the motor from the
case. See the section Preparing the Filter – Charging the Media Modules for detailed instruction on
charging the filter stack.
Rinse or replace media as required. The filter case should be rinsed whenever the media is cleaned or
changed. NEVER use soap or detergents when cleaning. Any remaining traces may damage sensitive fish
tissues.
Replace Module Stack in the canister and slide in the Foam Screen. Perform any required Impeller care see
"Impeller Maintenance section". Set the Motor unit back in place. There is only one way in which the unit
can be properly assembled.
Relocate the filter, guide the Aqua-Stop block in place and lock by pressing the handle to a horizontal
f.27
position.
Water should start flowing immediately, otherwise, pump the self-primer handle to restart.
Allow the canister to completely fill before plugging the unit into power. The Fluval unit
should never be allowed to run dry. Plugging the unit in before the canister is full may
prevent the self-priming feature from working properly.
Whenever the filter is started, some air may be trapped within the system. Tilt or shake the canister to allow
any air to be expelled. (See expanded discussion of trapped air at the end of the "Starting the Filter"
Section).
Alternate new media introduction
Filter media should be changed at the regular recommended intervals. However, not all media should be
replaced at one time. Stagger filter material changes so there is always old filter material in the filter. This
enhances replacement of important bacterial colonies lost with discarded media. It promotes rapid seeding
for continued bacterial action within the filter. To further heighten the bacterial filter, use Cycle Biological
Aquarium Supplement once a week to institute, supplement and promote the correct beneficial bacteria and
to encourage them to become the dominant strains within the bacterial filter.
WARNING
The supply cord of this appliance cannot be replaced; if the cord is damaged, the appliance
should be discarded. Disconnect the plug from all appliances inside the aquarium before
putting hands in the water. Pump must never be allowed to run dry.
