the lowest Media Module to ensure the purest stream possible before it enters the biological
[and possibly chemical] filtration that relies on debris-free water for maximum efficiency.
Incorporate Biological areas after mechanical filtration. Protect from debris as
much as possible.
There are a number of media that become highly biological in nature as they mature. This is
due to the fact that these substrates provide clean, hard attachment points for the beneficial
bacteria to colonize. For nitrifying bacteria to be most effective, they must receive a constant
stream of waste free water that carries ammonia, nitrite and oxygen in the solution.
Rebuild the Media Module Stack with the charged modules. Slide the Foam Screen back into place. Replace
the Motor ensuring that it is level before closing the clamps. The Motor and case has a spline to prevent
inverted installation.
Installing the Filter
1)
Place the filter in desired location beside or beneath the aquarium. Since the filter uses gravity feed,
ensure the filter is stationed below the water level of the aquarium.
FILTER MUST NEVER BE INSTALLED ABOVE WATER LEVEL
Rim Adapter Assembly
Assemble the Rim Adapter/Pipe Connector. Slide the Directional Output Nozzle onto the output tube.
Insert the tube adapter into the input stem, and then connect the input tube.
Place the Rim Adapter/Pipe Connector in the desired place on the aquarium frame. Ensure the intake
stem is the required length. If it is too long, cut straight across the tube with a sharp knife. Ensure the
intake strainer is within
Measure the required amount of hose to attach the Rim Adapter/Pipe Connector to the Input and
Output Stems on the filter. Be sure to leave a small amount of slack, the hose should not be stretched
tightly between connections, nor should it be so loose as to bend and constrict the tube.
After the hose has been cut to size with a sharp knife or pair of scissors, attach one end of each hose to
the input and output sides of the Rim Attachment/Pipe Connector. Twist the Hose Lock Nuts tight by hand
o n l y. Attach the other ends to the appropriate connection on the Fluval Hose Attachments on the Aqua-
Stop Block. Once again, twist the Hose Lock Nuts to lock secure l y. Hand tighten only.
Adjust the height of the Adjustable Output Adapter
the water surface. It can also be rotated horizontally to ensure output is pointed where current is
required.
Position suction cups or brackets on intake and exhaust hoses and the intake tube. Attach to aquarium.
Starting the Filter
The filter incorporates a priming feature to expel air from the intake tube and begin water flow. Once the
filter is connected to the input and output system, pump the Self Primer to eliminate the air in the intake stem.
This can take a single pump or more, depending on the configuration of the connection system.
When water starts flowing, return the pump handle to the down position. If left raised, the water flow of the
pump can be impeded.
Allow the canister to completely fill before connecting to power. The Fluval unit should never
be allowed to run dry. Premature operation may result in damage to the motor.
Plug the unit into power after it has fully filled.
Some air will inevitably be trapped within the unit as it fills, or new media may release trapped air into the
canister. Tilt the canister to expel any trapped air.
air pockets in the filter over time. If the canister continually traps and expels air over an extended time,
carefully examine the input/output system for air leaks. Ensure there is no air source (such as an airstone or
aeration device) entering the intake of the filter.
