WOODTURNING LATHE
ASSEMBLING:
Speed: 2000 rpm (6000 rpm only for very thin
work pieces).
The High-Speed motor (accessory 162 420)
is recommended for harder wood types (it is then
suggested to reduce the rotating speed with a 2nd
countershaft).
The connection pieces of U2 and U6 must
be fastened tightly. Do not fasten the connection
pieces of U9 tightly, as it is practical to be able to
move U9 without having to open the connection
pieces.
Stretch tailstock U6 shortly (do not turn the
handle too far inwards). The center U54 should
stand out approx. 5 mm off the collet.
Remove the slide- (spindle-) screw from U9,
move the upper part of the slide by hand (to shift
the hand rest with the handwheel is slow and cum-
bersome). Control the free moving of U9 (adjust by
means of an Allan-key).
The hand rest support U27 should be close
to the workpiece without touching it.
Enforcement with the machine bed as used at
the turning machine is not necessary.

DRIVE-BELT TENSION:

The right drive-belt tension is very important
and to control it you should do the following:
1. Switch on the motor
2. Stop the rotating workpiece abruptly.
The motor must also stop abruptly ! If it keeps
on turning the synthetic ventilator of the motor will
wear out and will have to be replaced (troubleso-
me).

To fix the work piece:
Use a 6mm drill for the center-hole (max. depth
10mm). Grease the tip of the tailstock and clamp it
to the workpiece by means of the handwheel until
the motor speed goes down slightly, and then fasten
the Allan-screw of the tailstock slightly. Control
frequently whether the work piece is fixed safely
enough. Tighten the collet holder U48 frequently (at
the tailstock U6 as well as at the countershaft U2).
Recommended: accessories 162 450 rotating
centre.
WORKING:
Woodturning procedure:
The most important prerequisite is a good, sharp
gouge (or a set of them). These must be re-sharpe-
ned during working.
If you begin with squared timber which will usually
be the case, then the gouge should be held slightly
diagonal in order to avoid the breaking of the edge.
The top of the gouge should be above the rotational
axis (of the work piece). If necessary the hand rest
can be elevated by fixing the distance piece (see
instructions page 21, foto 2) of the jig-saw between
cross-slide and hand rest.
The right hand holding the handle of the gouge is
positioned lower than the hand rest.
Start working from the bigger diameter to the
smaller one (and also from outside to inside). The
gouge should be held in such a way that, as with
planing, it cuts off a chip from the work piece. After
the successful cut turn the chisel slightly to take off
the chip completely.
