Operating and assembly instructions S-MP ATEX
A direct evaluation of the PTC-resistor sensor by the fre-
quency converter is not usually permissible in ATEX applica-
tions (in this regard, please refer to the specifi cations of the
converter manufacturer!).
Note!
For operation of the drive motor with a frequency
converter, the following points should also be
noted:
• Only motors marked Ex db eb motor „frequency
converter compatible" must be used at the fre-
quency converter.
• Unless expressly stated by the motor manu-
facturer, the converter supply voltage must not
exceed 400 V and the cable length must not
exceed 20 m. For longer cable lengths, higher
supply voltages and/or special EMC requirements,
suitable additional measures may be necessary. In
this case, please contact the converter supplier.
If additional fi lter components are required, ensure
that suffi cient space is reserved in the control
cabinet.
• The connection cables must be kept short and
laid without interim terminal points and without
connectors.
• Connect the motor and PTC evaluation cable be-
tween the motor and frequency converter output
with shielded cables.
• Connect the shielding braid of all cables con-
sistently and on both sides, i.e. to the frequency
converter, motor and control cabinet, to establish
a low impedance electrical connection with the
protector conductive system. A suitable EMC
cable gland must be used on the motor side to
establish a low impedance contact with the entire
cable shielding.
3.3.2 Special features of drive motors for frequency
converter operation:
• Depending on the input voltage of the converter, the motor
can operate with a delta or star-point connection. The
specifi cations on the motor nameplate are defi nitive.
• Please refer to the information on EMC-compliant instal-
lation and assembly of the frequency converter, in the
supplier documentation.
• Tripping relays that meet the criteria set out in Directive
IEC 61508 are suitable and able to switch to a fail-safe
safety position in the case of faults.
• Connect the output contact of the triggering device to an
appropriate release input on the frequency converter or
take another appropriate measure, ensuring that the
switch-off of the fan meets the safety requirements and it
can only be reset manually.
• The Ex db eb II 2GD T4 135°C motors used are equipped
with "PTC sensors for sole protection". This must be con-
nected to an ATEX-certifi ed triggering device and evalu-
ated so that the fan is switched off reliably in the case of
an error (see 3.3.1).
Do not connect the frequency converter directly to the
monitoring device!
• Use EMC cable connections at the motor.
• If special ambient conditions prevail, which cause strong
contamination of the blower or the cooling ribs of the
motor, ensure regular inspection of the devices.

3.3.3 For trouble-free operation of the blower, it is
important that the converter meets the following
requirements:
Note!
An unsuitable explosion-proof frequency con-
verter must not be operated in the ATEX environ-
ment of the motor/blower. It is essential that this
is properly installed, parametrized and operated
outside of the ATEX zone.
• Converter output equal to or higher than motor output at
max. frequency*)
• Converter current equal to or higher than rated motor
current at max. frequency*)
• Converter output voltage equal to or higher than rated
motor voltage at max. frequency*)
• Supply voltage max. 480V, including 5% voltage tolerance
• Pulse frequency of the converter equal to or greater than
8 kHz because a lower pulse frequency can cause loud
motor noises.
Note!
Insofar as a frequency converter package is
included with the delivery, it is not suitable for
installation and operation in an ATEX environ-
ment and must be properly installed, parameter-
ized and operated outside of the ATEX zone. You
must read the instructions in the operating and
installation instructions for the frequency con-
verter.
• If a motor fi lter is included in the scope of supply, it must
be installed in accordance with the specifi cations in the
assembly instructions of the converter/motor fi lter manu-
facturer.
*) Refer to the nameplate for values.
3.3.4 Special features related to connection and
commissioning of the blower / drive motor with
converter operation
• The limit data for converter operation is stamped on the
nameplate of the motors with pressure-proof
encapsulation.
At the converter, the voltage/frequency assignment
must be set according to the diagram.

• Never set a higher frequency (speed) at the converter
than the max. frequency f
B
Otherwise the motor can be overloaded or the blower
can be destroyed due to the excessive speed of the
blower impeller.
• No specifi c boost should be permitted to occur in the lower
frequency range because the winding can overheat if the
cooling capacity of the blower blade is reduced.
