coffee filter before use , so that it fits perfectly in
the filter.
• If using whole coffee beans, grind them freshly
before use.
• If you use ground coffee, keep the pack tightly
closed and store in the fridge.

3.1. Using the appliance

• Open the tank lid. Fill the water tank with clear,
cold water. You can measure the required amount
of water with the litre level indicators on the glass
jug  and with the cup or litre level indicators on
the water tank . As soon as the tank is filled with
water the tank light comes on, this makes it easier
to see the water level.
• Remove the filter from its holder using the lever on
the filter handle .
coffee filters. Fold the paper
• Put a paper coffee filter into the filter . Add
ground coffee according to taste and the required
number of cups.
• Push the filter back into its holder until you hear it
click into place .
• Place the glass jug with the lid into the appliance
from the side .
• Start the brewing process by pressing the Start &
Stop button . The LED lights up and brewing
begins.
• To make smaller amounts of coffee (2-5 cups) first
press the ½ jug button  – see also point 3.2. –
and then press the Start & Stop button .
• When brewing is finished the tank light goes off.
• For safety reasons and to save energy the appliance
switches off automatically after 40 minutes and
the LED goes off. You can switch off the appliance
manually at any time by pressing the Start & Stop
button .
3.2. Best flavour for small amounts of coffee
When making smaller amounts of coffee often the
flavour cannot fully develop because of the short
brewing time. Your Excellent 5.0 allows you to extend
the brewing time, to get full coffee flavour even with
small amounts of coffee. If you want to make fewer
than 6 cups
• Prepare the appliance as described in point 3.1.
• First press the ½ jug button , to activate the
longer brewing time.
• Then press the Start & Stop button  to start
brewing.
4. Descaling
Depending on the water hardness in your area the
appliance will in time develop limescale. This increases
energy consumption, as the limescale on the heating
element hinders the transfer of energy. The appliance
could be damaged and will not work perfectly if too
much limescale builds up. When the red LED "CALC"
 lights up when making coffee, it means that too
much limescale has built up on the heater. Descale the
appliance as soon as possible as described in points
4.1. and 4.2. The descaling light  will go off following
the first rinse after descaling. If, however, the light stays
on this means the limescale layer on the heater is so
thick that descaling once was not enough or that the
descaling agent was not strong enough. If this occurs
repeat the descaling process.
4.1. Descaling
• Follow the manufacturers instructions regarding
amounts and pour the descaler into the water tank.
We recommend using "Melitta
Café Machines".
• Turn the appliance on and follow the descaler manu-
facturer's instructions.
• When the descaler liquid has fully run through the
appliance then it should be turned off.
