Instructions for use the HAS 9 and HAS 18-type safety device,
according to EN 341:2011 Class C / EN 360:2002
Introduction: The HAS 9 and HAS 18 are safety devices with integrated energy absorbing and descending
function. Combined with a EN 361-compliant body harness it secures people undertaking work with a risk of falling,
for example on tanker vehicles or in high-bay warehouses. After the fall is arrested the person involved in the fall
will be lowered directly and safely at around 0.7 m/s. Before use these instructions for use should be read in full
and their content understood. A rescue plan for all potential emergencies at work should be available.
Important notice: The HAS device must not be used in climbing centres or similar leisure facilities

Safety instructions

1. The HAS device must only be used in accordance with its intended use. Failing to follow the instructions for
use may put lives at risk! No alterations or enhancements may be made to the device.
2. The HAS device may only be used by people who are trained accordingly and are confident in handling the
device. Operators must not have any health impairments! (Should not be under the influence of alcohol,
drugs or medication or have any cardiovascular problems).
3. Never open or attempt to repair the HAS device yourself. This may only be done by appropriate experts who
are trained and authorised by the manufacturer.
4. The HAS device is only approved to be used for the protection of one person. The maximum nominal load
is 136kg, and the minimum load is 50kg. The trade association rules and regulations for health and safety at
work DGUV R 112-198 and DGUV R 112-199 must be observed.
5. The instructions for use for the subsystems used should always be observed.
6. The legibility of the product labelling should be checked before each use.
7. A visual and functional check of the HAS device should be performed before each use. To do so attach the
device to a suitable point: Pull the lanyard and make sure the pawls engage audibly and there is a noticeable
braking resistance. Hold the lanyard firmly and guide it as it feeds into the device. Letting go of the lanyard
can cause injuries and damage to the device as it will feed into the housing rapidly and uncontrollably.
8. Check that the snap hook is working flawlessly (self-closing, lockable). Check that the steel lanyard is free of
defects. A HAS device with a damaged lanyard, e.g. kink in the lanyard or a broken lanyard strand, should
not be used.
9. If there are any doubts regarding the safe functional condition of the device or if it has been stressed as a
result of an impact load it should be withdrawn from use and presented for inspection to an expert trained
and authorised by the manufacturer. The expert should approve its continued use in writing.
10. A sufficiently strong, suitable fastening point corresponding to the national regulations with a min. load-
bearing capacity of 9 kN (North America 22.2 kN) should be chosen for the device. The fastening is done
with snap hooks according to EN 362:2004 / CSA Z259.12-01 / ANSI/ASSE Z359.12-2009 or sling according
to EN 795, whereby the sling is pulled through the bracket of the device and closed with a secured snap
hook
( ). In case of devices with rotatable swivel eye hanging, the snap hook is connected to the anchorage point

and rotatable swivel eye. For use of the fall arrester on a type C / class C anchor device according to EN 795
/ (only if approved for shared use) with a vertically flexible anchor line, the excursion of the anchor device
has to be considered when determining the required clearance underneath the person using the device. The
information provided in the instructions for use of the anchor device has to be observed in this context.
11. The HAS should only be used vertically. The anchorage point should be as perpendicular as possible above
the head of the person being secured to prevent them from swinging in the event of a fall.
12. The retractable connecting lanyard should be connected to the anchorage loop of the full body
(EN
361) using the snap hook with opening width 21mm. The snap hook should be locked. Caution: If the
fall indicator on the snap hook is triggered (see Pic 13a) by a fall impact, the device should be immediately
withdrawn from use and inspected and repaired by an authorised expert. A re-approval should be
documented in writing in the log book.
13. The clear fall zone beneath the person being secured should be at least 2m.
14. The permissible temperature range for deployment of the HAS device is between -40º and + 50º Celsius.
15. The HAS device should be inspected by an authorised expert after each descent as required when
the maximum permissible abseiling work has been attained and at least once annually. This should be
