3. Prior to Operation

Always ensure tools are used,
inspected and maintained in
compliance with the respective
local, state, national or federal
regulations.
• Before starting to work, disconnect enginge
from power supply. Carefully read operating
instructions for the engine and if necessary
for the other equipment assemblies and
devices (e.g. radio etc.)
ATTENTION
Ensure that the radio code is recorded.
CAUTION
Jacked up vehicles must be secured
adequately.
ATTENTION
Only use appropriate spare parts.

Camshaft Adjustment
➪ Use HAZET 2588-5 and HAZET 2588-6
Camshaft Setting Plates
➪ For model usage / engine codes
refer to Application Chart, pages 6 - 11
• Set the engine to TDC position. In this
position you can insert the Camshaft Setting
Plate HAZET 2588-5 into the elongated slot
in the camshaft and it prevents the
experienced mechanics. Always wear personal protective equipment.

Composition and Function
Maintenance work on engines must be carried out only by
camshaft from twisting.
• Turn the engine at the crankshaft, until one
end of the Camshaft Setting Plate HAZET
2588-5 bears on the cylinder head.
• At the other end of the Camshaft Setting
Plate, measure distance using a feeler
gauge, e.g. HAZET 2147.
• Divide this distance by two and insert a
feeler gauge of this thickness between
Camshaft Setting Plate and cylinder head.
• Turn the engine until the Camshaft Setting
Plate bears on the feeler gauge.
• Insert a second feeler gauge of the same
thickness at the other end between
Camshaft Setting Plate and cylinder head.

On some 1.9l TDi engines (see Application
Chart) is not necessary to remove the
camshaft cover.
• Remove the vacuum pump in order to have
access to the elongated slot at the end of
the camshaft.
• Screw the Camshaft Setting Plate HAZET
2588-6 with the 2 threaded bolts into the
vacuum pump retaining bolt holes and ins-
ert the plate into the elongated slot.

Locking the Injection Pump
➪ Use Locking Pins HAZET 2588-3 and
HAZET 2588-7
➪ For model usage / engine codes
refer to Application Chart, pages 6 - 11
• The injection pump locking pins are
designed to pass through the datum holes
in the timing belt sprockets and into the
fixed holes on the engine.
• Locking Pin 2588-3 is used when 2-part
injection pump sprockets are fitted. These
injection pump sprockets are fixed with 3
screws. The locking pin is inserted through
the sprocket carrier into a datum hole in the
engine.
