Setting the microscope up
1. Take the microscope out if its box and remove the various protective
packaging elements. Keep the packaging for long-term storage or for
transport.
2. Fit the binocular head and lock the base using the knurled screw.
3. Screw in the three X 4, X 10 and X 40 objectives onto the turret in
increasing order of magnification.
4. Place the oculars in the ocular tubes.
5. The microscope can be used in non-polarized light (e.g. for histology) by
removing the polarizing filter and working without the analyser filter; to do
this push in the tab (A) (on the right side of the head).
6. To use the microscope in polarized light, a very dark background must be
obtained (maximum extinction); to do this place the polarizer (B) on the
light condenser (C), fit the analyser by pulling out the tab (A) (on the right
side of the head), and rotate the polarizing filter until maximal extinction is
obtained. The economy polarizing microscope is equipped with very
intense lighting far in excess of that needed for working in polarized light.
This intense light source is particularly useful for work in standard light (e.g.
in histology, non-polarized light, etc.). To obtain maximal extinction in
polarized light (almost black to the eye) all that is required is to reduce the
intensity of the light. Maximum extinction is obtained when the polarizing
filter and the analysing filter are in crossed positions (90° to each other).
The microscope is now ready to be used in polarized light.

Using and adjusting the microscope
To move the microscope lift it only by the curved upper part of the stand,
placing the other hand under the stand.
- Turn on the on/off switch and rotate the light intensity knob on the base to
obtain the required lighting.
- Put the thin slide in place.
- The observation head which can be rotated over 360° and the tubes inclined
at a 30° angle provide excellent ergonomics and make prolonged use
comfortable.
- The parafocal lenses make it easier to focus when changing magnifications.
The X 40 objective is removable in order to avoid damage to the preparation
of slide in case of accidental contact.
- Focusing is done by moving the stage vertically using the focusing knob for
coarse focusing and a coaxial micrometer knob for fine focusing. The ring on
the base of the coarse-focusing knob makes it possible to adjust the tightness
of the latter.
