3.4.Modes of operation

3.4.1.Expired mode

Description
Expired mode measures the level of carbon monoxide exhaled by the patient. It also displays an instantaneous measurement of CO in the atmospheric
air.
In expired air, the measurement can by displayed:
in ppm: parts per million
in % COHb : percentage of CO trapped in the haemoglobin
in % FCOHb: percentage of CO trapped in the foetal haemoglobin
The relation between ppm and %COHb was shown in a study by MJ. JARVIS, M. BELCHER, C.VESEY, DCS. HUTCHISON, in Thorax, volume 41, n°11,
pages 886-887 of November 1986.
The value displayed in expired mode is the peak value, i.e. the highest. Change the measurement unit (ppm, %COHb, %COHbF) by pressing successively
on "Unit/0".
The CO trapper captures the last millilitres of expired air, called alveolar air. For an instantaneous measurement in atmospheric air, remove the CO
trapper; the electrochemical sensor is in direct contact with the atmospheric air.

Use
1.Place a new single-use CO trapper into the TABATABA® V2. Check the no-return membrane is present inside the trapper.
2.Take a new single-use pipette and check it for visual defects and foreign bodies. Place the pipette inside the trapper and check it fits tightly into the
trapper.
3.Press On/Off button
The device displays a series of messages. Follow the instructions:
When the device displays "Insp" ask the patient to breathe in.
When the device displays "Bloc" ask the patient to hold their breath.
When the green LED lights up (device displays "expi") tell the patient to place the pipette in the mouth and breathe out slowly and
completely.
4.Wait approximately 15 seconds, while commenting on the rising CO, to make the patient aware.
Between two measurements in Expired mode
1.
Discard the used pipette.
2.
Remove the used trapper and directly discard it.
3.
Switch off the device.
4.
Use a dry cloth to clean the opening to remove humidity.
5.
Ventilate the sensor and wait one or two minutes.
