A lot of attention should be attached to the shape and kind of cuff used. It has
been proved how important it is to empty the network of blood vessels in the
foot. For this reason, the cuff should not only be wrapped around the whole leg,
but also the foot. The single-chamber cuffs are just as effective as the multi-cham-
ber cuffs. The only exception to this is in the treatment of lymph oedema (swell-
ing) where multi-chamber cuffs have proved to be more effective.
By rhythmically increasing and lowering the pressure on the tissue, water and
protein is pumped out of the layer of cells surrounding the blood vessels. If the
medical grounds warrant it, a pressure bandage or an elastic stocking should be
worn after treatment with AIC has taken place. This is because the protein still
remaining after treatment with AIC causes blood serum to fl ow back into the tis-
sue. This step prevents the fl owing back. You can forgo these steps if you simply
remain lying after each session. For this reason, treatment should preferably take
place just before you go to bed.
