Thus, this region should be avoided as the main control area and - in harnesses with low suspen-
sion or with very tall pilots - this is achieved by elongation of Brake lines. Since there is insufficient
travel available above the shoulder (region of pull), the brake zone must be shifted into the pres-
sure zone (region of push). Smaller pilots, or those whose harness is has high attachment points,
can usually choose to either keep the brakes at their shortest position and to control within the
region of pull (above the shoulders) or to lengthen the brakes and thus steer within the lower arm
position. However you choose to set your brake line lengths, it is imperative that you can stall the
BLUE when landing, without taking wraps. This can also happen dynamically (while taking advan-
tage of the oscillation effect).
Taking wraps (coiling the steering lines around the hands) is not recommended since the pilot's
ability to interpret the point of stall is lost (shifting of reference point), the blood flow to the hands
is reduced, and restricted hand movement could prevent deployment of the reserve in an emer-
gency. If you desire a more secure grip on the brake handle, use the "ski-stick" method: slide the
hand through the brake handle with your palms up and hold the handle from behind at the D-ring.
Carefully adjusted brakes allow you to fly without tiring and permit complete canopy control in all
situations - without taking wraps! The manufacturer's adjustment marks should be regarded as a
starting point from which the brakes may be lengthened if required. Modification should be made
in small steps of about 2 cm until the optimal position has
been reached. Please ensure you retain symmetrical adjustment of left and right brake lines!
The brake handle should be secured with a permanent knot, and we recommend the single fisher-
man's knot since it minimizes stress on the line material:
