7 Applications

7.1 Sub-Bass Enhancement
®
of R-Series
and T-Series
PA Systems driven by the

Digital Field Controller (DFC)

For certain applications, you may want your PA system
to render bass frequencies below 60 or even 40 Hertz.
Depending on the specific enclosures with which
you will be combining the SL 218 As – for example,
HK AUDIO
®
HL 118 or RL 118 (F) – the combined
system's lower frequency limit can then go all the
way down to 32 Hertz.
In this section we are only discussing applications
in which the SL 218 As are driven exclusively by
HK AUDIO
®
Digital Field Controllers (DFC). This
configuration, in addition to ensuring the SL 218 A
delivers the best possible response, also has the
advantage of allowing you to use HK AUDIO
Controller software to control and monitor the
SL 218 A remotely and independently of R-Series
or T-Series systems.
If you intend to drive the SL 218 A via a mixer's Aux-
Send or matrix output, connect this output to the
DFC's full-range input using a balanced audio cable.
Then connect the DFC's LF Out to the SL 218 A's
Signal In, again using a balanced audio cable. If you
are using several SL 218 As to which you want to send
the same audio signal, use a balanced audio cable
to connect the second SL 218 A's Signal In to the
first SL 218 A's Through jack, and so forth.
Note!
Connect all cables first, and then switch on all other
devices in the audio signal chain before switching
the SL 218 A on. When switching the system off,
proceed in reverse order; that is, switch the SL 218 A
off first.
Set up the SL 218 A as follows:
Set the Bypass switch to Bypass On.
Set the Gain knob to 0 dBu.
Set the Phase switch to 0°.
To configure the DFC that is driving the SL 218 A(s),
set the parameters in the HK AUDIO
®
software as follows:
DFC filter set:
Linear Sub only
Controller/Rack mode: Expert Sub only
Upper frequency limit: between 60 and 80 Hz
Slope:
24 dB
Delay:
2.22m (equals 6.531 ms)
You must use the Audio Controller software rather
than the DFC to make all these settings; when
Controller/Rack mode is set to Expert Sub only,
you cannot select the upper frequency limit directly
®
on the DFC.
The Audio Controller software's master channel
strip offers a virtual Level Fader that lets you adjust
the level of the connected SL 218 A(s).
Important note!
The latency of the Linear Sub only filter set, used in
combination with the Controller/Rack mode Expert
Sub only, and the latency of filter sets used to drive
R-Series" and T-Series sound reinforcement systems
are not the same. This is why you must enter a delay
value of 2.22m (that is, a time 6.531 ms) for the
SL 218 A.
Additional delay time compensation may be necessary
®
Audio
if the SL 218 A and the PA system's subwoofers are
not placed side by side or on top of one another.
®
For further setting options as well as details regarding
the remote control and monitoring of HK AUDIO
sound reinforcement systems, refer to the
Digital Field Controller and Audio Controller
software manuals.
7.2 Sub-Bass Enhancement of
®
R-Series
, T-Series and Projector
PA Systems driven by the AC 22
The lower frequency limit (-3 dB) of the HK AUDIO
sound reinforcement systems Projector, R-Series
and T-Series when driven by the AC 22 controller
is as follows:
System
Subwoofer
Projector
SUB 1 / SUB 2
T-Series
HL118
T-Series
LP 118
R-Series
®
RL 118 (F)
Depending on the given combination of subwoofers
and the respective sound reinforcement system, adding
the SL 218 A can drop the low frequency limit of the
combined system to 32 Hertz.
Audio Controller
You do not need an additional controller to drive the
SL 218 A for applications described in this section.
This means that you can enhance your sound re-
inforcement system's sub-bass response very easily
and with no further effort using the SL 218 A.
