4. Clarifying Filtration

4.1 Screw lid onto the receiver flask (Fig. 2).
4.2 Close off the three connections (female Luer slip) on
the lid with the plugs provided (Fig. 3).
4.3 Screw filter rest (table) onto the lid of the receiver
flask (Fig. 4).
4.4 Place the filter support on the filter rest and then
a 47 mm d membrane filter on top of it (If necessary,
place 37 mm d prefilter on the membrane filter.) (Fig. 5).
4.5 Next, attach the upper portion of the filter holder to
the filter rest (Fig. 6).
4.6 Screw second lid onto the upper portion (after inserting
the proper O-ring) (Fig. 7).
4.7 For vacuum filtration, screw the filling funnel onto
the upper Iid, and insert a plug in one of the lateral
connections of the filter rest (Fig. 8).
4.8 Connect a vacuum hose to a hose nipple and attach
the end of the hose to a vacuum source (water jet pump
or a water filter vacuum pump) before inserting the hose
nipple in the other Iateral connection (Fig. 9)
4.9 Pour the liquid to be filter into the filling funnel, and
apply vacuum to the bottom portion of the filter holder
to filter (Fig. 10).
As an alternative, you may also filter using pressure.
Follow the same steps as described in 4. -4.6. Both lateral
connections on the filter rest are left open.
After pouring the liquid to be filtered into the filling
funnel, screw on closing cap and insert a plug into each
of the two upper connections. Attach a hose nipple to
the third connection (after connecting it first to a pressure
hose, and attaching hose to a pressure source). Apply
pressure (2 bar max.) to the filter holder in order to filter
(Fig. 11).

5. Sterilizing Filtration

5.1 Insert a 0.2 µm membrane filter (and prefilter,
if required) into the filter holder, and cap all of the
connections on the two lids (top and bottom). Screw
closing cap onto the filling port. Insert a plug into
one of the lateral connections of the filter rest.
Attach a syringe filter holder, SM 16514, to the other
conncection, after previously inserting a completely
hydrophobic filter SM 13307 - 013 into the syinge
filter holder (Fig. 12).
