G Operating Instructions
Renkforce 30 cm (12") Subwoofer Chassis
Item no. 370335
Intended use
The 30 cm (12") subwoofer chassis is used to convert the electric output signals from audio ampli-
fiers into audible sound waves and is only licensed for connection to the loudspeaker outputs of
such devices.
Use is only permitted in the car or closed rooms, i.e. not outdoors. Do not expose the device to
moisture such as e.g. in bathrooms or similar rooms.
Any use other than described above may cause damage to the product. Moreover, it will cause
dangers such as short-circuit, fire, electric shock, etc.
This product complies with the applicable national and European requirements All names of com-
panies and products are the trademarks of the respective owners. All rights reserved.
The safety instructions must be observed at all times.
Safety instructions
I n case of damage caused by not complying with these safety instructions the guaran-
tee will be rendered void. We will not assume liability for any resulting damage.
W e do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improper
use or non-compliance with the safety instructions. The warranty is voided in these
cases.
A n exclamation mark in a triangle indicates that there are important instructions in
the operating instructions. Please read all the instructions before using this device,
they include important information on its correct operation.
• For safety reasons, any unauthorised conversion and/or modification to the product is not per-
mitted.
• Please observe the local traffic regulations when installing and operating the subwoofer chas-
sis.
• Do not expose the subwoofer chassis to high temperatures, dripping or splashing water, strong
vibrations and heavy mechanical stress.
• Never pour any liquids onto electric devices and do not place any liquid-filled objects onto them.
• Do not place open sources of fire such as burning candles alongside the appliance.
• When connecting the subwoofer chassis also observe the safety instructions of the connected
appliance.
• Do not store any magnetic data media like discs, video tapes etc. since the magnetic field of the
speaker can destroy the information stored on the mentioned data media.
• Do not listen to excessively loud music for longer periods of time. This may damage your hear-
ing.
• An excessive volume inside the car could result in acoustic warning signals not being heard.
This constitutes a danger to yourself and other road users. Therefore, make sure the volume is
at a suitable level.
• Inattentiveness in traffic can lead to serious accidents. Operation of the hi-fi system may there-
fore only take place if the traffic situation permits and you are not unduly distracted by operating
the system.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. These may become dangerous playing material for
children.
• If in doubt about how to connect the device correctly or should any questions arise that are
not answered in these operating instructions, please contact our technical advisory service or
another specialist.
Mounting/enclosure construction
C hanges on the car, necessary for mounting the subwoofer chassis or other compo-
nents, always have to be made in a way ensuring they do not influence the road traffic
safety or the structural stability of the car. With many cars, the type approval will
lapse if you merely saw out a section of the sheet metal. If you are in doubt about
where to install the device, consult your car dealer. Make sure before any drilling on
the car, that it will not lead to damage to electric cables, brake lines, the fuel tank or
similar.
I f using tools to install your car hi-fi components, observe the manufacturer's safety
instructions. When mounting the subwoofer chassis or your hifi-system, consider the
danger of injury which results from torn off devices in case of an accident. Therefore,
you should secure every component in a place where it cannot be dangerous to pas-
sengers.
The subwoofer chassis has been designed for mounting in a bandpass enclosure or a bass reflex
enclosure.
For this you can use a fitting enclosure or construct an enclosure on your own. When constructing
an enclosure by yourself, you have the advantage, that the enclosure can be fitted to the shape
of your trunk. An exact description how to build such a subwoofer enclosure overexceeds the
scope of this manual. Therefore you should get informed on this by appropriate technical literature.
There are numerous software programs available on the market that can be helpful for calculation
of the subwoofer enclosure. The parameters needed can be found in the technical data at the end
of this manual.
The following lists some hints, to be observed when mounting the enclosure:
• You should use 19 to 22 mm MDF material for the enclosure.
• The internal electrical connection of the chassis to the speaker terminal should have a minimum
diameter of 2.5 mm
.
2
• Please use rounded reflex tubes for constructing the bass reflex enclosure or the bandpass
enclosure, in order to avoid air flow sounds.
• The seams of the enclosure have to be absolutely air tight. You can use a sealing agent or sili-
cone to seal seams.
• Let the enclosure be aerated sufficiently after finishing before you mount the subwoofer chas-
sis, since the solvent of the adhesive and the sealing agent can dissolve the adhesive areas of
the speaker.
• Calculate the desired enclosure with the speaker parameters given in the technical data.
• In order to ensure total air tightness the sealing surface on the speaker cage of the subwoofer
chassis should be endued with sealing agent or self-adhesive sealing band before the final
mounting in the enclosure.
• Fix the subwoofer chassis in the enclosure to all mounting holes in order to reach a sufficient
stability and to avoid shape distortion of the speaker cage.
• Protect the membrane from damages by mounting a fitting covering grating to the subwoofer
chassis.
Connection
T o avoid short-circuits and the resulting damages, detach the minus pole (mass) from
the car battery when connecting the subwoofer. Before reconnecting the negative
pole to the battery, ensure that the subwoofer has been completely connected and
checked. Only use a volt meter or a diode test lamp for checking the voltage on the
vehicle system leads, as normal test lamps consume excessive voltage and may thus
damage the vehicle's electronics. When connecting the subwoofer, make sure that
the connection cables are not squashed or damaged by sharp edges. The loudspeak-
ers may only be connected to suitable car amplifier loudspeaker outputs.
M ake sure that the data for impedance and load capacity stated in the Technical Data
table corresponds to the data of the connected amplifier. Otherwise damage to the
loudspeakers or the amplifier can occur.
In order to ensure clear playback, you must operate the subwoofer via an amplifier with an active
switch, which ensures:
• that there is enough output
• that the subwoofer is only supplied with the low bass range of the music signals
Depending on the vehicle, set the low-pass separation frequency of the active switch between
80 and 120 Hz.
Connect the loudspeaker leads from the car amplifier to both connection terminals on the sub-
woofer.
