12. Protecting hot-water prefab fireplaces and inserts from overheating

During the operation of hot water prefab fireplaces (inserts) their overheating may occur,
most frequently due to a power supply failure. The circulation pump will stop and the water
temperature in the exchanger will rise abruptly as the produced heat is not removed. Protection
from overheating may be implemented in several ways. The Romotop Company strongly
recommends you to install some of them.
Aftercooling loop – In case of a power supply
failure and overheating of the heat exchanger over
the safe limit the aftercooling thermostatic valve will
let cold water from the water main to a loop installed
in the exchanger. Cold water flowing through the
aftercooling loop will remove heat from the
exchanger and flow to the drain.
Aftercooling with a DBV valve – In case of a
power supply failure and overheating of the heat
exchanger over the safe limit it will let overheating
water to the drain and at the same time control
automatic replenishment of the heating system with
cold water from the main.
Backup power supply of the pump –
In case of a power supply failure it supports
the operation of the pump for a short time
until the fire in the fireplace (insert) goes out
Protecting the heating system from high pressure
To protect the heating system from high pressure we recommend you to use a safety valve. It is
installed at the outlet of heating water from the heat exchanger. No closing valve may be installed between
the heat exchanger and safety valve. The maximum distance of the safety valve from the source is 20xDN.
The safety valve should be accessible well for regular functional verifications. The guarantee terms of the
Romotop Company are valid on condition you use this safety valve.
Protection of the heat exchanger from low temperature corrosion
To prevent formation of condensate on the heat exchanger wall you must always equip the heating circuit
of a hot water prefab fireplace (insert) with a thermostatic mixing valve that maintains the water
temperature at the fireplace (insert) inlet at the minimum temperature of 65°C. The guarantee terms of
the Romotop Company are valid on condition you use this thermostatic mixing valve.
