pH electrode for aquaria
For continuous measurement of the pH value in fresh water and sea water aquaria
- Instructions for use: please read carefully and keep in a safe place. -
Congratulations on purchasing this high-quality pH electrode from DENNERLE. If used properly and treated with due care, this set will provide a simple, conveni-
ent and reliable means of supplying your aquarium with CO
, the most important fertilizer for aquarium plants - thus ensuring magnificent plant growth. CO

serves to establish an ideal pH value for fish and plants, in the slightly acidic to neutral range. DENNERLE wishes you hours of fun with your aquarium!

1 Which equipment can the
pH electrode be used with?
The DENNERLE pH electrode for aquaria works perfectly in combination
with digital pH controllers 588 and 588 Comfort from DENNERLE.
Equally, it can also be used with all other standard pH measuring and
control devices with BNC connector. Please observe the instructions for
use of the device concerned!

4 Calibrating the pH electrode
4.1 Purpose of calibration and calibration interval
Any measuring instrument can only be as accurate as the connected sen-
sor. The pH electrode is thus a vitally important part of your pH measu-
ring device.
As every pH electrode may drift somewhat in the course of time, it is
crucial to calibrate the pH electrode
-
when putting it into operation for the 1st time
-
after the 1st week
-
and then every 4 to 6 weeks (under normal operating conditions),
in order to ensure correct functioning of the electrode and the qua-
lity of the measurement results.
4.2 Preparations for the calibrati-

on process
Ideal temperature of the calibrating soluti-
ons: 20-25 °C.
Pour pH 7 and pH 4 calibrating solution into
two separate, clean receptacles up to a level
of approx. 2 cm. Pour a little distilled water
into a third receptacle.
Please note: The accuracy of the calibration depends above all on the qua-
lity of the employed calibrating solutions. We thus recommend original
DENNERLE calibrating solutions.
Do not carry out calibration in the supply bottles - water on the pH elec-
trode may alter the calibrating solutions!

5 Care and maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Clean dirty electrodes with a soft cloth. IMPORTANT: The spherical elec-
trode tip is highly sensitive and should be dabbed, not rubbed! Then
rinse and calibrate.
5.2 Service life
All pH electrodes are subject to wear and normally have a service life
of 12 to 36 months, i.e. the average life is around 24 months. The
level of wear varies according to water hardness, acid content of the
water, germ load, algal growth, general fouling, mechanical strain,
care, etc.
5.3 Special information
• Never allow a pH electrode to dry out! When pH electrodes are to
remain out of use for a prolonged period, fill Quali-Safe electrode
protector with KCl solution and fit onto electrode tip. Screw lid into
place.
• Should the electrode inadvertently be allowed to dry out, you can
attempt to restore it to working order by placing it in KCl solution for
24 h, with the electrode tip submerged by approx. 2 cm. Then rinse
electrode with distilled water and calibrate.
• DO NOT store electrode in distilled water!
• Do not submerge electrode completely under water! The electrode cap
must always be at least 2 cm above the surface of the water.
• Install the electrode in the darkest possible part of the aquarium, to
avoid exposure to algal growth. Electrode tips coated with algae
may have a detrimental effect on measuring accuracy.
• Do not install electrode cables together with other electric cables
over long distances. In this way, you can avoid the possibility of
other electric circuits influencing the measurement results.
• Do not kink the electrode cable.
• IMPORTANT: If the pH electrode is not in the aquarium water, the devi-
ce will be unable to perform its measurement and control functions cor-
rectly – which may put your fish in danger! You should therefore check
water and place in pH 7 calibrating
the position of the electrode and the water level on a regular basis!
