to be repairedif any defects occur. It is also possibleto retrieve
satellites from Earth orbit and return them to earthbound facilities for
technological updating before placing them in orbit once again.

scientistsandtechniciansinto low Earthorbitfor sevendaysor more.
Therethey are able to performexperiments and observations using
speciallydesignedmodules carriedin the payload bay.This capabili-
ty enables commercial organizations t o conducttests inenvironmental
andgravitational c onditionsthat cannotbe duplicated on Earth.
The impressive orbiteris similar in size to a modernjetliner like
the McDonnell-Douglas DC-9.Thespacecraftis morethan 121 feet

The orbiter lands on a tricycle landing gear similarto an airplane.
Thecrew cabin in the noseis dividedintotwo sectionsconsisting
of a flight deck with seatingfor four crewmenanda mid-deck area
that servesas the crew quartersandcontainsadditional s eatingfor
three Astronauts.In an emergency situation,the mid-deck area can
be reconfigured priorto launchto provideseatingfor threeadditional
Astronauts. T his is the first timein the historyof manned spaceflight
that a rescuecapability hasbecome available tothespacecommunity.
As the latest step in the adventureof spaceflight,the Space
ShuttleSystemrepresentsthe vehiclethat will enableAstronauts to
