Am 16. Juli 1969 um 9.32 Uhr morgenserfolgte der Startder gigantischen
Saturn V von Cape Canaveral,die bedeutendste Reisein der Geschichte der
Menschheit. Die riesige Saturn V bestand aus drei Hauptstufen, war 110 m
hoch und wog 3.000 Tonnen. Sie konnte eine Nutzlast von 50 t befördern
und erreichteeineGeschwindigkeit v on 112 kmßekunde.Die 394.000 km
lange Reisebis zum Mond dauerte 72 Stunden. Nach Erreicheneiner
niedrigenErdumlaufbahn erhieltdieObereBaugruppemit derApollokapsel
von der dritten Stufe der Trägerraketeden Schub zum Erreichender
Fluggeschwindigkeit zum Mond. SpäterlöstesichdieApollo-Baugruppe von
der Rakete,drehte sich und zog die Mondlandefähre aus der Schutzhülle. So
aneinandergekoppelt gelangtedieseEinheit z um Mond und schwenkteauf
eine Mondumlaufbahnein. Nacheinigen Mondumläufentrennte sich die
Mondlandefähremit den AstronautenN. Armstrong und E.Aldrinan Bord
von der Kommandokapsel in der nur der Astronaut M. Collins verblieb. Die
Mondfähre setztemit zwei Zündungendes Retromotorszur Landungim
„Meer der Ruhe"an. In I km HöheertönteplötzlichzweiAlarmsignale eines
überlastetenComputers;diese erwiesen sich aber als technischeFehler.
Nach der Landung legten die Astronauten
Lebenserhaltungstornister an und öffneten dieLuke.Armstrongkletterteals
erster heraus und betrat als erster Mensch den Mond.

Haupttriebwerksverließen die Astronauten die Mondumlaufbahn und
flogen zur Erdezurück.(Geschwindigkeit 42.250 km/h).NachErreichen der
Erdatmosphäre schwebtedie Apollokapsel a m 24. Juli an drei Fallschirmen
hängend mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 362 km/h zur Wasseroberfläche.
Die Missionhatte insgesamt195 Stundengedauert.WertvolleMondsteine
und hunderte von Fotos waren die handgreiflichen Ergebnisse dieser
historischenMission.MehrereMillionenZuschauerfolgten diesemEreignis
vor den Bildschirmen.

On 16thJuly1969 at 9.32a.m.the mostimportantvoyagein humanhistory
started: the lift-off of the gigantic Saturn V from Cape Canaveral.The giant
Saturn V consisted of three main stages, was 110 m high and weighed
3,000 tonnes.It could carrya payloadof 50 tonnesand reacheda speedof
112 km/second.The 394,000 km long voyageto the moon lastedfor 72
hours.After reachinga low orbit round the earth the top unit with the
Apollo capsulereceived sufficientthrust from the third stageof the launch
vehicleto reachthe requiredspeedto travelto the moon. Laterthe Apollo
unit separated from the rocket, rotated and drew the lunar module from its
protective sheath. When these linked units reached the moon they swive led
into an orbit round the moon. After a few lunar orbits, the lunar module
with astronautsN. Armstrong and E.Aldrin on board, left the command
module in which astronaut M. Collins remained. The unar module made a
landing in the "Sea of Tranquillity" after the retro motor was fired twice.
Suddenly,at a height of I km, two alarm signalswere sounded by an
overloadedcomputer;but theywereonlya technicalhitch.After the landing
the astronauts put on their portable life-support systems and opened the
hatch.Armstrongwasthe first to clamberout and becomethe first manon
the moon. Hisfamousfirst wordswere "Thisisonlyonesmallstepfor a man
but a great leap forward for mankind". The astronauts spent two and a half
hours on the moon, collecting surface samples and setting up scientific
instruments. They moved in 1/6 of earth's gravity. On completion of their
missionthe astronauts took off in the top stageof the lunar module,went
back into orbit and docked with the Apollo capsule, into which they
transferred and the first stage was jettisoned. The astronauts ignited the
mainengineto leavethe lunarorbit andflew backto earth.(Speed42,250
km/h). Back in the earth's atmosphere,on 24th Julythe Apollo capsule
floated down on three parachutes at a speed of 362 km/h to land on water.
The mission had lasted a total of 195 hours. Valuable moon
hundredsof photoswere tangibleevidenceof this historicmission.Millions
of viewersfollowedtheir progress on theirTVscreens.
