Periodic Phenomena
Kundt's tube with analog outputs
Ref : 22204
We also observe that we have one pressure antinode on the closed end and one
pressure node on the loudspeaker's membrane.
We remark that the surface of the closed end does not exactly correspond to a pressure
antinode, it has shifted slightly to the right by about 0.6 cm.
We can thus continue with higher frequencies by limiting ourselves to 5 or 6 maxima.
Notes:
The method designed to make the resonance frequency value reach "the ear" for each of
the possible vibratory modes is quite random and very difficult to implement for the
students. We can however make them notice the increase in the sound intensity perceived
for the resonance frequencies, especially for the lower ones.
To carry out a proper acquisition without jerks, the tube containing the microphone must
slide very slowly and steadily. The movement must last about 2 min (that is a
displacement of a few mm per second at the most). We can either push the tube starting
from the microphone from abscissa 0, or pull it from the abscissa on the extreme right.
The experimental results obtained for the theoretical frequencies are sometimes
inaccurate: it is thus necessary to adjust the sound frequency used to obtain the lowest
minima at the level of the pressure nodes. In practice, the theoretical values demonstrated
are compliant. It is advisable to take into account the temperature to calculate the speed of
sound from the expression:
