3.2. Installing a smoke detector in a room with an unusual shape
- Corridors with a maximum length of 3 m: Max. 15 m between 2 smoke detectors.
- Gabled rooms
o If the slope of the ceiling exceeds 20 ° from the horizontal, the smoke detectors must be
installed between 0.5 m and 1 m from the ceiling.
o Partially gabled rooms: if the flat ceiling has a width less than or greater than 1 m, consider
the slope of the ceiling to be greater than 20°. If the width of the ceiling exceeds 1 m, think
of it as a conventional ceiling.
- Rooms with divided ceilings:
o If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is less than or equal to 0.2 m, a
smoke detector can be installed either on the beams or on the ceiling.
o If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is greater than 0.2 m and the area of
your ceiling panels is less than or equal to 36 m2, use the ceiling as normal.
o If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is greater than 0.2 m and the service
of the ceiling panels is greater than 36 m2, you must install a smoke detector on each
ceiling panel.
3.3 Areas to avoid when installing a smoke detector
- In an environment with air draughts (e.g. near an air-conditioning or fan system).
- Areas where there are frequent fires, such as kitchens.
- Areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms, or near appliances such as dishwashers or
washing machines.
