INFORMATION ON USE, SAFETY, LIFESPAN, STORAGE AND
CARE
This product is part of personal protective equipment (PPE) and
should be assigned to a specific person. This manual contains
important notes (Industrial safety helmets to EN 397: additional
control card and test certificate). Before using this product,
all documents must have been read and their content under-
stood.
This document must be provided to the user by the retailer in
the respective country's language and must be kept with the
equipment while it is in use.
Instructions for use
These instructions must be carefully read and followed. This
product has been manufactured specially for mountaineering,
climbing and working at heights and in depths and does not
release the user from any personal liability.
Mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths
often harbour hidden dangers and risks caused by external in-
fluences. Risk of accidents must never be excluded. In order to
achieve maximum safety when mountaineering, climbing and
working at heights and in depths, safe use of equipment is only
guaranteed if it complies with industrial norms.
For more detailed and comprehensive information, please refer
to relevant special literature.
The following instructions are important to ensure appropri-
ate and correct use of the equipment. However, they cannot
replace experience, responsible behaviour and awareness of
the risks inherent in mountaineering, climbing and working at
heights and in depths and do not release the user from any
personal responsibility. Use of the equipment is only permitted
to fit and experienced individuals or under appropriate guidance
and tuition.
Users must be aware that poor physical and mental health can
jeopardise safety under normal conditions and in emergencies.
Before using the equipment, users must familiarise themselves
with safe and effective rescue procedures.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable if the equipment has
been abused or used incorrectly.
All risks and responsibilities are borne by the user at all times.
When using this product in the areas of rescuing and personal
protective equipment, we recommend that the relevant national
regulations be observed.
PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Fitting
To provide safe protection, this helmet must be adapted to the
head size of the user. The safety helmet must be adjusted to
head size in such a way so that it cannot shift or slip off when
the chin strap has been tightened. This is the only way to ensure
protection from the helmet. The helmet is only secure when the
chinstrap is closed, the straps are pulled taught, and adjust-
ments have been made to fit individual head size. The straps
may not cover the ears and the closure may not rest on the
chin. No pressure should be exerted on the larynx when the
chinstrap is closed. The helmet should always be horizontal on
the user's head in order to also protect the forehead.
MADILLO
Prior to use, completely unfold the helmet (Fig. 1).
1.) Unfold rear shell fully.
2.) Pull out side shells until these audibly click into place on the
hooks of the rear shell. Whilst doing so, pull backward and
hold the rear shell with moderate force. The helmet is now
unfolded to the maximum head size.
Attention: The helmet must not be used with the side shells
pushed in.
To adapt the helmet to the head size of the user, put the helmet
on and push the side shells into the rear shell (Fig. 2).
To increase the helmet size, lift adjusting clip A lightly and pull
the rear shell to a larger position (Fig. 3).
Using the belt adjusting braces on the sides of the chin belt,
the position of the chin belt can be adjusted to the user's
head shape.
Transport version: The helmet can be folded for transport (Fig.
4).
1.) Lift adjusting clip A lightly and pull the rear shell backward
to the largest position.
2.) Lift adjustment clip A lightly and fully push in the side shells,
fold the rear shell in.

Adjusting to head size is carried out by means of the neck
strap.
Prior to usage, always ensure that adjusting buckle of the neck
strap is properly closed. The suspension cinches on the sides
of the chinstrap allow the position of the strap to be individually
adjusted to fit any head shape.
TARGA; THE SHIELD; ULTRALIGHT SUPER COMFORT
Adjusting to head size: there is a turn button in the nape region
of the helmet. Turning to the left will release the headband.
Turning to the right (clockwise) gradually reduces the head size.
The suspension cinches located on the side of the chinstrap
allow the strap to be adjusted to individual head size.
Turning the regulating screw opens and closes the suspension
cinches (The Shield, Ultralight SC only).
GENERAL INFORMATION ON SAFETY, PRODUCT LIFE,
STORAGE, CARE AND IDENTIFICATION
Safety notices
If original components are modified or removed from the
product, its safety aspects may be restricted. The equipment
should not be modified in any way or altered to allow attach-
ment of additional parts without the manufacturer's written
recommendation. Paint, solvents, adhesives or self-adhering
stickers may only be applied in keeping with the manufacturer's
instructions. The equipment must be checked for possible da-
mage before and after each use. It must be ensured that the
equipment is serviceable and fully functional. The equipment
must be discarded immediately if there is even the slightest
doubt as to its serviceability. A helmet will not always prevent
injuries, depending on the specific danger. In addition, sharp
edges, wetness and especially icing-up can diminish the sta-
bility of textiles!
WARNING! The products must be kept away from damaging en-
vironments. This includes contact with corrosive and aggressive
substances (e.g. acids, alkalis, soldering water, oils, cleaning
agents), as well as extreme temperatures and flying sparks.
Climate requirements
The temperature for continuous use of the product (in dry
condition) for mountaineer helmets to EN 12492 ranges from
approx. -20 °C to +35 °C, for industrial safety helmets to EN
397 ranges from approx. -10 °C to +50 °C.
Lifespan and replacement
The lifespan of the product mainly depends mainly on the way
and frequency in which it is used and external influences.
Products made from synthetic fibre (PA, PES, PP) are subject
to a certain ageing process even if they are not used. This is
caused by the intensivity of UV-rays and environmental influ-
ences.
Maximum lifespan under optimal storage conditions (see sec-
tion on storage) and without use: 10 years.
Occasional use
Occasional and appropriate use without obvious wear and tear
and with optimal storage: 6 years.
Frequent or Extreme Usage
Under extreme conditions with frequent impacts from rocks or
ice and numerous scratches and dents, the safety reserves can
be depleted within a very short period of time and thus make
replacement inevitable. The helmet absorbs the energies resul-
ting from an impact which could include the helmet's partial
destruction or damages on shell and interior parts.
The helmet must be replaced after a severe impact (fall, rock or
ice impact), even if the damage is not immediately visible.
The same applies to deep scratches or contact with chemicals
(attention: battery acid!).
Repairs may only be carried out by the manufacturer or in ac-
cordance with procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
Inspection (for industrial safety helmets to EN 397)
The product must be checked and, if necessary, maintained
whenever this is necessary but at least yearly by the manufac-
turer, an expert or an authorised testing centre.
In the process, it must be ensured among other things that the
product labelling is legible. Once the above-mentioned 6 ye-
ars period of use has been exceeded, the personal protection
equipment product must be withdrawn from further use.
Storage, transport and care
Storage
Store in a cool, dry, dark place outside transport containers.
Avoid contact with chemicals (caution: battery acid!) Store
without mechanical stress caused by jamming, pressure or
tension.
Transport
The product must be kept away from direct sunlight, chemicals,
dirt and mechanical damage. For this purpose, a protective bag
or special storage and transport containers should be used.
Cleaning
Clean soiled products in luke-warm water (if necessary, use pH-
neutral soap). Rinse well. Dry at room temperature, never use a
tumble drier or dry close to radiators! If required, halogen-free
commercial disinfectants may be used. If required, hinges of
metal parts may be oiled after cleaning.
