Replacing Mechanical Seals

Replacing Mechanical Seals
Risk of damage to pump or other property.
• Only qualified persons should perform maintenance on electrical or mechanical devices.
• Care must be taken not to damage the motor fan or cover.
• Do not use petroleum-based cleaners or lubricants.
• Care must be taken not to contaminate the seal faces.
Disassembly
1. Ensure the pump is disconnected from
electrical power and drained.
2. Disconnect the tubing leading to the
pressure switch.
3. Remove the bolts (1) and casing (2).
4. Pry the diffuser (4) out of the casing
using two slotted screwdrivers for lever-
age.
5. Remove the cap (5) and insert a screw-
driver to prevent the shaft from turning.
6. Unscrew the impeller (6).
• It has a right-hand thread.
• If the impeller cannot be turned by hand, insert a flat object into the impeller vane.
7. Slip the rotating seal (7) off the shaft.
8. Remove the seal plate (8).
9. Remove the ceramic seal seat (9) from the seal plate.
10. Inspect all parts and replace any that are worn or damaged.
Reassembly
1. Clean all parts thoroughly with dish soap and water before assembling, including the rubber cap
on the ceramic seal (9).
NOTE: If the pump remains out of service longer than one week, the components must be
installed dry and without lubrication.
2. Push the ceramic seal into the adapter (9) with the smooth surface of the seal facing outwards.
Use thumbs only.
3. Install the seal plate on the motor.
4. Lubricate the rotating seal (7) with soapy water and slip it onto the shaft with the carbon ring
towards the ceramic seal.
5. Replace the impeller (6) and the diffuser (4).
6. Replace the casing (2), making sure that the gasket is not damaged and is in place.
7. Reconnect the tubes to the casing and pressure switch.
8. Replace the drain and fill the plugs
