G e n e r a l i n f o r m a t i o n :
TI series of Thermo
-Expansion Valves are designed
for refrigeration, heat pump and air conditioning. In
addition to the valve body (1), an orifice (2), a nut and
an optional TIA braze adapter (3) are required for
installation. (see Fig.1)
S a f e t y i n s t r u c t i o n s :
• Read operating instructions thoroughly. Failure
to comply can result in device failure, system
damage or personal injury.
• According to EN 13313 this product is intended
for use by personnel having the appropriate
knowledge and skill.
• Before opening any system make sure pressure in
system is brought to and remains at atmospheric
pressure.
• Do
not release any
refrigerant into the
atmosphere!
• Do not exceed the specified maximum ratings for
pressure and temperature.
• Do not use any other fluid without prior approval
of EMERSON. Use of fluids not listed could result
in: Change of hazard category of product and
consequently change of conformity assessment
requirement for product in accordance with
European
Pressure
Equipment
14/68/EU.
• Ensure that design, installation and operation
comply
with
European
standards/regulations.
I n s t a l l a t i o n :
• Valves may be installed in any position but should be
located as close as possible to the distributor or
evaporator inlet.
• Connect the liquid line to the TI valve inlet after the
orifice with strainer have been inserted. (No. 1 Fig.1).
• The expansion valve must be protected against all
contaminants. Install a filter drier and a sight glass in
front of the valve.
Flare Connections: (Fig.3)
- Use a nut according to DIN/EN/SAE/ANSI
standards. Shape of tube end must be in 45° angle,
straight edge, free from swarf (Fig.4a & 4b)
- Tightening torques for the nuts:
Inlet: 40...50 Nm
External equalizer: 17...20 Nm
- Apply a few drops of refrigeration oil on surfaces
of angled tube before fastening.
Warning: Failure to do so will cause
improper tightness. Leakage detection at a
specified torque requires an examination of
flare edge and nut. Torques over the specified
value may not stop the leakage. Do not over
torque the nut at the inlet connection. The
orifice would be jammed inside and will cause a
valve malfunction.
Brazing Connections:(Fig.5 & 6)
- Perform brazing in accordance with EN 14324.
- Before and after brazing clean tubing and brazing
joints.
- To avoid oxidization, it is advised to purge the
system with an inert gas such as nitrogen while
brazing.
Brazing connections TILE (Fig.5):
- TILE with stainless steel does not require any wet
rag during brazing. It is important to consider the
following subjects:
- Use of flux and silver rod with minimum 30%
silver. Direct torch away from valve
Brazing connections TIS(E) (Fig.6):
- Wrap wet rag around the valve to prevent valve
damage while brazing. Direct torch away from
valve body (max. temp. 120 °C).

Operating instruction
Thermo™-Expansion Valve TI Series
TIA Brazing Adapter (Fig.1 & 2):
- Use supplied copper washer as shown in Fig.1.
Make sure that the surface of brass orifice (see
No.1 Fig.1) is scratch/damage free and apply a few
drops of refrigeration oil.
- Tightening torque for adapter nut: 40...50 Nm
• Unwind the capillary tube.
Warning: Do not bend capillary tube directly at
the connection to the valve. Permitted: distance
N (10 mm) and radius R (5 mm). (Fig.7)
• Securely fasten the bulb with straps provided.
Insulate bulb with suitable material. The location of
bulb on suction line depends on size of suction line
(see Fig. 8)
• Be sure that the external equalizer line cannot siphon
oil from the suction line.
P r e s s u r e T e s t :
After completion of installation, a pressure test must be
carried out as follows:
- according to EN 378 for systems which must
comply with European pressure equipment
directive PED 14/68/EU.
- to maximum working pressure of system for other
applications.
Warning:
Directive
• Failure to do so could result in loss of refrigerant
and personal injury.
• The pressure test must be conducted by skilled
and
national
personnel with due respect for the danger related
to pressure.
L e a k a g e T e s t :
Conduct a tightness test according to EN 378-2 with
appropriate equipment and method to identify leakages
of external joints.
O p e r a t i o n :
Check for leaks, sufficient refrigerant charge and be
sure no flash gas is present before attempting to check
valve operation.
P r o p e r o p e r a t i o n o f c h a r g e s :
The maximum bulb temperature is limited to:
Code

Warning:
Gas charged valves features MOP function and only
operate properly if the temperature at the bulb is
below the temperature at valve head / capillary tube
(see Fig. 9). If the valve head becomes colder than
the bulb, malfunction of the expansion valve occurs
(i.e. erratic low pressure or excessive superheat).

Warning: TILE-ZW (R410A) may require the
increase of factory static superheat setting for low-
temperature refrigeration applications such as
freezers.
TI in systems with non-standard refrigerants:
The following refrigerants can be used with standard
