Builtas an adaptationof the Avro Lincolnbomber.and originallyproposedas the LincolnMk.lll.
the Avro Shackeltonwas builtto SpecificationR.5/46for an Air Ministryrequirementfor an ASW patrol
and attack acft. First flown on 9 Mar 49. the first prototype VW126 embodied all the features deemed ideal
for that role basedon wartime experience.The MR.Mk.Ifeatureda chin-mountedsearch radar, a large
bomb-bay to carry bombs and depth charges,and heavygun armamentin nose,dorsal and tail positions.
An order was placed for 29 MR.Mk.l acft. off the drawing board, and these first entered service
with No.236 OperationalConversionUnit and No.120Sqn at Kinloss,Scotland.A second batchof 58 acft.,
with detail differences. designated MR. Mk.lA followed. Due to deficiencies in the Mk_l variants that came
to light in operations, a further production of 69 substantially rnodified MR.Mk.2 acft. was ordered and
entered servicealongsidethe MR.Mk.l/MR.Mk.IA.The areaof operationswas substantiallyexpanded to
include overseas bases. gradually repldcing the Short Sunderland flying boats of
Further substantialredesignto enhance the acft.'s operationalcapabilityand crew efficiency
resultedin the MR.Mk.3variant.of which a total of 33 were built. This variant featured tricycle landing
gear, elimination of the dorsal turret installation, and various aerodynamic refinements, A further 8 acft
were supplied to the South African Air Force.
The MR.Mk.3 version is depicted in this kit, with markings for an MR.Mk.3, XF707/ C of No.206
Sqn Royal Air Force in the 60's. and MR.Mk.3,17201M of No.35Sqn South African Air Force
in 1980.
