QUICK START OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING! You are about to operate a torch that generates up to
500,000 BTUs and produces an intense open flame that is extremely
hot and nearly invisible during daylight hours. Use extreme
caution. Read and understand these instructions and retain
for future reference. This torch is intended for outdoor use only.
This torch is designed for a vapor-withdrawal LP Gas Cylinder.
PRIOR TO LIGHTING THE TORCH:
Protective clothing should be worn at all times. Primary eye protection
(safety glasses) should be worn under a full face shield. Leather
gloves should be worn when lighting and using the torch. Inspect the
intended burn area and remove any paper articles that could ignite
and remain smoldering. Do not operate in an enclosed area or where
flammables such as gasoline, oil or diesel fuel are present.
Familiarize yourself with the operation of the torch before lighting and
operating the torch. DANGER! Do no operate the torch if you smell
the odor of LP gas. Shut off the torch at once and check all connections
with soapy water for leaks. Do no operate the torch until all leaks are
stopped. Do no use any type of oil as a rust inhibitor. Direct the torch
only at objects you wish to ignite and burn. Provide fire extinguishing
materials nearby in case of an unplanned burn. Do no leave a lighted
torch unattended. Do not lay a lighted torch on the ground. Exercise
caution on windy days since burning debris can be blown to non-burn
areas. Keep the torch flame away from the cylinder, hose and valve
connections. Do not attempt to modify the torch assembly. Do not use
cylinders without vapor withdrawal valves. Do no use non-approved fuels.
Do not use this torch with acetylene.
USE WITH LP GAS ONLY.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Use a supply cylinder of no less than 20 lb. capacity. The cylinder must
be approved by the department of transportation and marked as such.
2.
Make certain that the cylinder valve is completely turned
off. Remove threaded plastic plug from valve.
3.
Inspect the internal threads of the cylinder valve, both
ends of the hose and torch valve for any debris. If
necessary, remove debris with a dry, clean cloth.
4.
Check that the O-ring on the P.O.L. connection is undamaged (hose
end that connects to the cylinder valve). NOTE: Both ends of the hose,
cylinder valve and torch valve have left-handed threads. Thread
putty and/or Teflon® tape should not be used for connections.
5.
Hand thread the hose end with the P.O.L. connection into the
cylinder valve until snug. Wrench tighten but do not over tighten.
6.
Secure the other end of the hose to the torch valve by using two
wrenches. This is a metal-to-metal seal: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Stretch the hose away from the supply cylinder. Do not tip the
supply cylinder over or place undue strain on the hose connections.
Check to see that the torch valve is in the closed position.
2.
Slowly open the cylinder valve 1/4 turn. You will hear the gas making
a hissing sound as it enters the hose and pressurizes it. Carefully
inspect the two connections with soapy water (leak check solution) for
leaks. Bubbles indicate a leak. Do not operate equipment with any
leaks. Do not use a match or open flame to check for leaks. Turn off
the cylinder valve at once if the odor of propane is detected. Never
attempt to use the torch if you detect a leak. IMPORTANT NOTE:
For safety, the hose contains an internal excess flow-check valve in
the P.O.L. connection (hose end that connects to the cylinder valve). If
you open the cylinder valve too quickly the P.O.L. will make a "click"
sound from the excess flow P.O.L. valve which means it has locked into
the close position. It usually takes 3 to 15 seconds for the excess flow
P.O.L. valve to move back to the open position. Cylinders containing
O.P.D.'s: Many new propane cylinders [4-43# capacity] may contain
O.P.D.'s [Overfill Prevention Devices] which are designed to stop
overfilling and also may restrict the flow of propane gas from the
cylinder to the torch (see back panel). If the device closes, you must
shut the cylinder valve and wait 15 seconds. Open the cylinder valve
slowly until the hose is fully pressurized; then slowly open the torch
valve and proceed with normal operating instructions for lighting.
There is a possibility that your O.P.D. equipped cylinder may not
supply enough gas flow for your requirements. You may need a larger
cylinder or a cylinder without an O.P.D. to get adequate flow. Questions
regarding gas supply should be directed to your local gas supplier.
3.
Always use a flint lighter to light the torch. Never attempt to
light the torch using matches or a cigarette lighter. Never place
your hand or any body part in front of the torch head.
4.
When lighting the torch, open the torch valve 1/8 turn or until the gas
can be heard exiting the head. Place the top of the flint lighter on the
bottom edge of the torch head and activate the flint lighter. Now that
the torch is lit, use the torch valve to adjust your flame size. NOTE: If
the torch does not light immediately or you get only a small flame,
turn the torch valve to a closed position. Repeat above "IMPORTANT
NOTE" notice to insure P.O.L. valve and/or O.P.D. is in open mode.
5.
After use, close the cylinder valve. Do not over tighten. After the
flame has burned off all of the gas out of the hose, shut the torch
adjusting valve. NOTE: Geographical location, size of the cylinder and
the volume in the cylinder will determine how much heat output your
torch will deliver. For example: a person in Florida using a full 20
lb. cylinder in 70°F temperature will get approximately 2-1/2 times
more cubic feet per hour than a person in North Dakota using a full
20 lb. cylinder in 0°F temperature. For more information, consult
your local liquid propane dealer, NPGA, or NFPA pamphlet 58.
STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE
Your new Forney Fireman Torch is a precision built piece of
equipment. Maintain it properly and store it in a secure place.
1.
Always make sure that the cylinder valve is closed.
2.
Disconnect the hose from the cylinder and install
the plastic plug back into the cylinder valve.
3.
Do not attempt to store a "hot" or recently burned
torch. Allow time for the unit to cool down.
4.
Do not attempt to cool the torch head in water or in oil.
SAFETY TIPS: Never store the cylinder in a pick-up cab, toolbox,
automobile trunk, in unventilated confined spaces, rooms used for habitation
or near any source of heat or ignition. The cylinder should be stored in
compliance with Chapter 5 of ANSI/NFPA pamphlet 58, the standard for
storage and handling of LP gases (see cylinder instruction). Do not use a
cylinder that is dented, damaged or corroded. Protect the LP hose form hot
objects, corrosive liquids or sharp objects. Do not use a hose that appears to
be damaged. Do not use the torch as a heating device for humans or animals.
Liquid propane gas is heavier than air (it can accumulate in certain
areas) and has a distinct odor. If you detect this odor, discontinue
use, determine source of leak and correct the situation.
WARNING! Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use
this torch for thawing frozen water pipes under houses. Brick
and concrete can explode if subjected to high temperatures.
Do not overheat these materials while using the torch.
INSTRUCTIONS DE DÉMARRAGE RAPIDE
AVERTISSEMENT!
