Fuel gas odour
Liquid propane gas and natural gas have artificial scented substances which offer particular assistance for the detection of fuel
gas leaks. In the event of leakage, you can normally smell the fuel gas. As propane (liquefied gas) is heavier than air, you can
smell the gas odour at ground level.
WHENEVER YOU DETECT THE ODOUR OF GAS YOU MUST ACT IMMEDIATELY!!
Ÿ Avoid any actions which could ignite the fuel gas. Do not actuate any electrical switches. Do not pull out the network cable
or extension cable. Do not light any matches or other ignition sources. Do not use your telephone.
Ÿ Make certain that all persons leave the building immediately and keep well away the danger zone.
Ÿ Propane gas (liquefied gas) is heavier than air and can accumulate at lower levels. When a propane leak is suspected, a
avoid all lower-lying areas.
Ÿ Use the telephone of a person nearby to call your fuel gas supplier and the fire department. Do not return to the building
or area in question.
Ÿ Stay outside the building and well away from the danger zone until the fire department and your gas supplier
declare this to be safe again.
Ÿ Finally, ask your fuel gas service technician and the fire department personnel to carry out testing for gas leakage.
Make certain that the building and the area are sufficiently ventilated before returning. Properly trained service technicians
must repair all leaks, test for further leaks and then run up the system for you.
