    Power requirements The NT-USB is powered by your device’s USB port, meaning that in most instances you can just plug the microphone in and get started right away. For non-standard USB ports, a powered USB hub may be required. The NT-USB is a “Plug & Play” USB device, compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Apple iPad via the USB camera connection kit (available directly from Apple). The NT-USB features a purple LED inside the microphone cage that indicates when the microphone has power. If the light does not turn on after plugging the microphone in, the computer or device you are using may not provide enough power for the NT-USB. If this is the case, we recommend connecting the NT-USB via a powered USB hub.
  • Page 8 Mounting the NT-USB The NT-USB is supplied with a high quality tripod mount. To assemble simply screw the mounting ring onto the tripod stand (diagram 1). The mounting ring can also be used as a mic clip to attach the NT-USB to a mic or boom stand. To install the NT-USB in the mounting ring place the micro- phone in the mount from above (optionally using the pop filter), and thread into the mounting ring.   • Page 9 To change the microphone position, always be sure to loosen the adjustment lever to ensure that you do not damage the stand. When recording vocals, always use the supplied pop filter, mounted in front of the microphone. The pop filter will prevent plosives (hard ‘P’, ‘B’, ‘T’ and ‘K’ sounds) from overloading the microphone’s capsule. Diagram 2 - Adjusting the microphone position...

    General operation The gold dot on the face of the NT-USB indicates the front of the microphone, and the pickup area of the capsule. The microphone (and gold dot) should always be facing towards the sound source that you wish to record. On the side of the NT-USB there are two adjustment knobs.   • Page 11 Monitor mix control The Monitor mix control (the top knob) is used to ‘mix’ between the direct microphone signal (your voice for example) and the sound from your audio recording software on your computer / device (the music that you are singing along to). By turning the knob counter-clockwise, you will hear more of the direct microphone signal, and less of the signal coming from the computer / device software. If you turn the knob clockwise, you will hear more of the computer/device signal, and less of the direct microphone signal. We recommend always beginning with the knob in the centre position. This will ensure that you are hearing an equal balance of both the direct signal, and the computer / device signal, enabling you to then achieve an ideal balance between the signals. Headphone volume control The headphone volume control (the bottom knob) allows you to control the volume of the playback through headphones connected to the NT-USB via the headphone jack.
  • Page 12 General operation cont. Recording vocals We strongly recommend using the supplied pop shield for all vocal recording. This aids in minimising plosive sounds (hard ‘P’, ‘B’, ‘T’ and ‘K’ sounds) that produce a sudden jet of air which can cause the capsule to overload and produce a ‘popping’ sound. Any moisture on the microphone capsule can cause problems for a condenser microphone such as the NT-USB, however the use of the pop shield will reduce the risk of this occurring. Placement of the microphone and relative to the vocalist may be varied on several factors including room acoustics, the vocal performance, and whether the vocalist has a high or deep voice. An ideal reference is to begin with the NT-USB with the pop shield attached, mounted directly in front of the vocalist, approximately 15cm (6”) away. The pop shield will assist in keeping the performer at a constant minimum distance from the microphone and helps to maintain reasonable recording levels. Moving the vocalist a little closer will make the vocal sound more intimate and full, while moving the vocalist back will give the vocal a little more ‘air’ or...

  • Page 14 General operation cont. Setting your input level: The NT-USB has been set to an ideal internal gain setting, without the need for physical level adjustments on the microphone body. Any necessary level adjustments to set the ideal recording level can be made from within your recording program, or via your computer’s system preferences. To adjust your input level from within your recording software, refer to the manual provided by the software developer. To manually adjust your input level via your computer’s system preferences, use the following instructions relevant to your device platform/operating system.

  • Page 22 Using the NT-USB with your Apple iPad ® The NT-USB can be used to record with an Apple iPad using the USB Camera Connection Kit applicable to your iPad version (available as an accessory from most Apple retailers). To record with the NT-USB on an iPad, simply connect the microphone to your iPad via the Camera Connection Kit, and the NT-USB will automatically replace the iPad’s internal audio circuitry as the input and output source. From there, you can record the NT-USB using your preferred application. We recommend using ‘RØDE Rec’ (RØDE’s dedicated audio app), Apple’s ‘GarageBand’ app, or Imageline’s ‘FL Studio Mobile’ app.
  • Page 23 Safety & maintenance After use the NT-USB should be removed from its tripod mount, wiped with a dry, soft cloth and placed in the supplied protective pouch. Be sure to place the moisture-absorbent crystals (supplied) at the head of the microphone, so as to absorb any moisture present. Eventually this pack of crystals will need to be dried. This is indicated by the crystals turning pink in colour. They can easily be re-used by placing them in an oven at 100 - 150 degrees celsius for approximately ten minutes. The crystals will operate effectively again once they have turned blue.

  • Page 33 Spannungsanforderungen Das NT-USB wird vom USB-Port Ihres Computers/Mobilgeräts gespeist und kann daher ohne Zusatzgeräte verwendet werden. Für USB-Ports mit abwei- chenden Spezifikationen benötigen Sie eventuell einen aktiven USB-Hub. Das NT-USB ist nicht nur Windows- und Mac-kompatibel, sondern kann auch über USB-Kameraanschlusssystem (das bei Apple erhältlich ist) mit einem iPad verbunden werden. Das NT-USB enthält eine lilafarbene LED, die leuchtet, wenn eine ausrei- chende Spannung vorliegt. Wenn sie nach Anschließen des Mikrofons nicht leuchtet, liefert Ihr Computer bzw. Mobilgerät keine für das NT-USB aus- reichende Spannung. Dann sollten Sie das NT-USB über den Umweg eines AKTIVEN USB-Hubs anschließen.
  • Page 34 Vorbereiten des NT-USB Zum Lieferumfang des NT-USB gehört ein hochwertiges Tischstativ. Für die Befestigung brauchen Sie nur den Montagering auf den Stativsockel zu schrauben (Abbildung 1). Der Montagering eignet sich auch für die Befestigung an einem Mikrofon- oder Galgenstativ. Um das NT-USB am Montagering zu befestigen, müssen sie es (eventuell gemeinsam mit dem Poppschutz) von oben her einschieben und provisorisch festdrehen.     Allgemeine Bedienung Der goldene Punkt auf dem Gehäuse des NT-USB zeigt die Vorderseite und folglich die Einsprechrichtung an. Das Mikrofon (der goldene Punkt) muss immer auf die Schallquelle gerichtet werden, die aufgenommen werden soll. An der Seite des NT-USB befinden sich zwei Regler.   • Page 37 Mischregler Mit dem Mischregler (oberer Regler) stellen Sie die Balance zischen dem direkten Mikrofonsignal (z.B. Ihrer Stimme) und dem Ausgangssignal der Audio-Software Ihres Computers (in der Regel der Playback-Pegel) ein. Drehen Sie den Regler nach links, wenn das Mikrofonsignal zu leise ist – das Ausgangssignal des Computers wird entsprechend leiser. Drehen Sie den Regler nach rechts, wenn das Ausgangssignal des Computers zu leise ist – das Mikrofon wird entsprechend leiser eingestellt. Am besten stellen Sie den Regler anfangs immer in die Mitte. Dann ist die Balance zwischen dem Mikrofon- und Playbacksignal nämlich im Prinzip ausgewogen. Lautstärkeregler für den Kopfhörer Der (untere) Kopfhörerpegelregler dient zum Einstellen des Pegels im Kopf- hörer, den man direkt an das NT-USB anschließen kann.
  • Page 38 Bedienung – Fortsetzung Gesangsaufnahmen Für Gesangsaufnahmen sollten Sie auf alle Fälle den beiliegenden Popp- schutz verwenden. Nur dann werden die starken Windstöße von Verschluss- lauten (“P”-, “B”-, “T”- und “K”-Laute) nämlich abgefangen und machen sich nicht als tieffrequente Plops bemerkbar. Ein zweiter Vorteil des Popschutzes ist das Abfangen von Feuchtigkeit, die sich also nicht auf der Kapsel Ihres NT-USB ablagern und Störungen verur- sachen kann. In welchem Winkel und Abstand sich das Mikrofon zum Sänger befinden muss, richtet sich nach so unterschiedlichen Faktoren wie der Raumakustik, dem Gesangsstil und der Stimmlage (hoch oder tief). Beginnen Sie mit folgender Faustregel: Bringen Sie den Poppschutz am NT- USB an und stellen Sie es ca. 15cm vom Sänger entfernt auf. Der Poppschutz hilft dem Sänger bei der Einhaltung eines mehr oder weniger gleichen Ab- stands zum Mikrofon, was sich u.a. positiv auf den Aufnahmepegel auswirkt. Je näher sich der Mund am Mikrofon befindet, desto voller und “intimer” klingt die Stimme. Bei einem größeren Abstand werden mehr Rauminforma- tionen aufgenommen. Allerdings spielt der Nahbesprechungseffekt (starker...

Experimentieren Sie auch einmal mit einer “Off-Axis”-Mikrofonierung, d.h. einer leicht versetzten Aufstellung im Verhältnis zum Mund (wenn sich der goldene Punkt nicht mehr genau davor befindet).     Bedienung – Fortsetzung Einstellen des Eingangspegels: Der Ausgangspegel des NT-USB wurde im Werk bereits optimal eingestellt und braucht im Prinzip nicht mehr geändert zu werden. Den Aufnahmepegel können Sie im Aufnahmeprogramm oder eventuell mit Hilfe der Systemein- stellungen Ihres Computers einstellen. Wie man den Eingangspegel im Audioprogramm einstellt, entnehmen Sie bitte dessen Bedienungsanleitung. Wenn Sie den Eingangspegel lieber mit den Systemeinstellungen Ihres Com- puters festlegen, müssen Sie wie nachstehend beschrieben verfahren.

  • Page 48 Verwendung mit einem Apple iPad ® Das NT-USB kann man auch an ein iPad anschließen, sofern man ein für das iPad geeignetes USB-Kamerakit (erhältlich bei Apple) anschließt. Um das Signal des NT-USB mit dem iPad aufzunehmen, müssen Sie das Mikrofon an das Kamerakit anschließen. Das NT-USB wird dann automatisch als Ein- und Ausgabegerät des iPad definiert. Danach steht das NT-USB als Eingabequelle für Aufnahmen zur Verfügung. Am besten verwenden Sie für die Aufnahme “RØDE Rec” (ein von RØDE entwickeltes Aufnahmeprogramm), die “GarageBand” App von Apple oder die “FL Studio Mobile” App von Imageline.

    Pflege und Wartung Nach der Verwendung muss das NT-USB aus dem Tischstativ geholt, mit einem weichen, trockenen Tuch abgewischt und im beiliegenden Staub- schutzbeutel verstaut werden. Für die Lagerung des Mikrofons ist darauf zu achten, dass sich die (beiliegen- den) feuchtigkeitsabsorbierenden Kristalle im Beutel o.ä. befinden. Nach einer Weile müssen diesen Kristalle vermutlich getrocknet werden, und zwar spätestens, wenn sie einen rosa Schein bekommen. Legen Sie sie dann ungefähr zehn Minuten bei 100°~150°C in den Backofen. Wenn die Kristalle wieder einen blauen Schein haben, können sie erneut verwendet werden.

    Alimentation Le NT-USB est alimenté par la prise USB de votre dispositif, ce qui signifie qu’il suffit, en général, de brancher le micro pour commencer le travail. Pour les prises USB non standardisées, un hub USB peut se révéler nécessaire. Le NT-USB est un micro “Plug & Play” compatible avec les systèmes Windows et Mac. Moyennant le kit de connexion pour appareil photo USB d’Apple, il peut aussi être branché à un iPad. Le NT-USB est pourvu d’un témoin LED mauve qui s’allume quand le micro est alimenté. S’il ne s’allume pas après la connexion du micro, votre ordi- nateur ou le dispositif auquel le micro est branché ne délivre pas de tension suffisante pour alimenter le NT-USB. Dans ce cas, branchez le NT-USB en passant par un hub USB actif (alimenté).

    Montage du NT-USB Le NT-USB est livré avec un trépied de table d’excellente qualité. Pour l’assembler, vissez l’anneau de fixation sur le trépied (illustration 1). L’anneau peut aussi servir à fixer le micro sur un pied ou une perche. Pour installer le NT-USB sur l’an- neau de fixation, insérez le micro (éventuellement pourvu du filtre anti-pop) par le haut et vissez-le provisoirement. Orientez le micro convenablement puis tournez la molette (dans le bas) dans le sens horaire pour le visser convenable- ment (illustration 1). Tournez la commande dans le sens antihoraire pour entendre mieux le signal du micro et moins celui de l’ordinateur. Inversement, tournez la commande dans le sens horaire pour augmenter le niveau du signal de l’ordinateur et diminuer celui du micro. Commencez toujours par régler cette commande au centre. La balance entre le signal du micro et le signal de playback est alors équilibrée: vous n’avez plus qu’à peaufiner le réglage en fonction de vos besoins.     Fonctionnement général (suite) Enregistrement de la voix Pour enregistrer la voix, nous conseillons vivement d’utiliser le filtre anti-pop fourni. Il minimise l’effet des plosives (des “P”, “B”, “T” et “K” énergiques) engendrant un déplacement d’air brutal qui frappe la capsule et génère des “pops”. Le filtre anti-pop rend également un autre service en protégeant la capsule à condensateur du NT-USB contre l’humidité et en évitant ainsi les problèmes qui y sont liés. L’angle et la distance du micro par rapport au chanteur dépendent de différents facteurs comme l’acoustique de la pièce, le style du chanteur et sa voix (aiguë ou grave). Commencez par la position de référence: installez l’anti-pop et placez le NT-USB directement devant le chanteur, à une distance de 15cm environ. L’anti-pop aide le chanteur à rester à une distance minimum plus ou moins constante du micro et permet d’obtenir des niveaux d’enregistrement relativement cohérents. Plus le chanteur est proche du micro, plus sa voix a un son plein et “intime”.     Utiliser le NT-USB avec un Apple iPad ® Le NT-USB peut aussi utilisé pour enregistrer sur iPad (moyennant le kit de connexion USB pour appareil photo numérique Apple). Pour enregistrer le signal du NT-USB avec l’iPad, branchez le micro avec le kit de connexion USB pour appareil photo numérique. Le NT-USB remplace automatiquement le circuit audio interne de l’iPad comme dispositif d’entrée et de sortie. Vous pouvez alors enregistrer avec le NT-USB en utilisant votre application favorite.     Soin & entretien Après utilisation, le NT-USB doit être retiré de son trépied, essuyé avec un chiffon doux et sec puis rangé dans sa housse de protection. Quand vous rangez le micro, n’oubliez pas de placer la pochette fournie contenant des cristaux absorbant l’humidité (dessiccateur) près de la tête du micro. Au bout d’un certain temps, les cristaux dessiccateurs doivent être séchés. Ils prennent alors une teinte rose. Vous pouvez rétablir leur faculté d’absorption en les plaçant environ 10 minutes dans un four chauffé à 100°~150°C. Quand les cristaux sont redevenus bleus, vous pouvez les utiliser à nouveau.

    Requisitos de alimentación La alimentación del NT-USB proviene del puerto USB del dispositivo, por lo que en la mayoría de los casos bastará con conectar el micrófono y ya podrás empezar a utilizarlo. Para puertos USB no estándar, es posible que deba utilizarse un concentrador USB autoalimentado. El NT-USB es un dispositivo USB “Plug & Play”, compatible con Windows y Mac, así como con el Apple iPad mediante el kit de conexión de cámara USB (disponible directamente en Apple). El NT-USB tiene un LED de color púrpura situado en el interior de la jaula del micrófono, que indica cuando el micrófono recibe alimentación. Si la luz no se enciende después de conectar el micrófono, significa que el ordenador o el dispositivo utilizados no proporcionan suficiente energía para el NT-USB. En este caso, recomendamos conectar el NT-USB a un concentrador USB autoalimentado.

  • Page 89 Control de la mezcla del monitor El Control de la mezcla del monitor (el mando superior) se utiliza para „mezclar“ la señal directa del micrófono (tu voz, por ejemplo) con el sonido del software de grabación de audio proveniente del ordenador/dispositivo (la música de acompañamiento para tu voz). Si giras el mando hacia la izquierda, escucharás más la señal directa del micrófono y menos la señal procedente del software del ordenador/dispositivo. Si giras el mando hacia la derecha, escucharás más la señal del ordenador/dispositivo y menos la señal directa del micrófono. Recomendamos empezar siempre con el mando en posición central. Así se escucha por igual la señal directa y la señal del ordenador/dispositivo, lo que permite conseguir un equilibrio ideal entre las señales. Control del volumen de los auriculares El control del volumen de los auriculares (el mando inferior) permite contro- lar el volumen de la reproducción a través de unos auriculares conectados al NT-USB desde la toma de auriculares.
  • Page 90 Funcionamiento general, cont. Grabar voces Recomendamos encarecidamente utilizar el protector suministrado siempre que se graben voces. Así se minimizan los sonidos oclusivos (los intensos sonidos „P“, „B“, „T“ y „K“), que crean una corriente de aire repentina que puede hacer que la cápsula se sobrecargue y emita sonidos „explosivos“. La humedad acumulada en la cápsula puede causar problemas en los micrófonos de condensador como el NT-USB, pero utilizando el protector se reduce el riesgo de que ello ocurra. La colocación del micrófono en relación con el cantante depende de distintos factores, como la acústica de la habitación, la interpretación vocal y si el cantante tiene una voz aguda o grave. Una referencia ideal para empezar es colocar la protección en el NT-USB y situarlo directamente delante del cantante, a unos 15cm (6”) de distan- cia. La protección también evita que el intérprete se acerque demasiado al micrófono, lo que ayuda a mantener unos niveles de grabación razonables.     Seguridad y mantenimiento Después de utilizarlo, debes retirar el NT-USB del trípode, limpiarlo con un paño seco y suave, y guardarlo en la funda protectora incluida. Coloca siempre los cristales absorbentes (incluidos) en el cabezal del micrófono, para absorber posibles humedades. Es posible que, en algún mo- mento, debas secar este paquete de cristales. Será necesario si los cristales presentan un color rosado. Podrás reutilizarlos fácilmente si los secas en un horno a 100°~150° centígrados durante unos diez minutos. Los cristales recuperarán su eficacia cuando vuelvan a ser de color azul.

    Montaggio dell’NT-USB L’NT-USB viene fornito con un trep- piede di alta qualità. Per assemblarli, avvitate semplicemente l’anello di montaggio nella base del treppiede (figura 1). L’anello di montaggio può essere attaccato anche ad un’asta per microfono. Per montare l’NT-USB nell’anello di montaggio posizionate il microfono sull’anello dall’alto (mettendo opzio- nalmente il filtro antipop) e avvitatelo nell’anello di montaggio. Una volta che il microfono è girato nella giusta direzione, ruotate in senso orario la rotella che si trova sul fondo, fino a stringerla (figura 1).   • Page 115 Controllo del mix dell’ascolto Il controllo del mix dell’ascolto (il controllo in alto) serve per regolare il ‘mix’ tra il segnale diretto del microfono (per esempio la vostra voce) ed il suono proveniente dal software di registrazione audio del vostro computer/ dispositivo (la musica sulla quale state cantando). Ruotando il controllo in senso antiorario, sentirete più segnale diretto del microfono e meno segnale proveniente dal software del computer/dispositivo. Se ruotate il controllo in senso orario, sentirete più segnale proveniente dal computer/dispositivo e meno segnale diretto del microfono. Vi consigliamo di partire sempre dalla posizione centrale. Questo vi garantirà di sentire sia il segnale diretto del microfono che quello del computer/dispo- sitivo collegato bilanciati in maniera equilibrata. Controllo del volume della cuffia Il controllo del volume della cuffia (quello in basso) vi permette di regolare il volume della riproduzione tramite le cuffie collegate al jack delle cuffie dell’NT-USB.
  • Page 116 Operazioni Generali, cont. Registrazione della voce Per tutte le registrazioni di voci, vi consigliamo vivamente di usare il filtro antipop fornito in dotazione. Vi aiuterà a minimizzare i suoni esplosivi (le consonanti ‘P’, ‘B’, ‘T’ e ‘K’) che producono un getto improvviso di aria che può sovraccaricare la capsula e produrre un ‘pop’. L’umidità sulla capsula del microfono potrebbe causare problemi a qualsiasi microfono a condensatore come l’NT-USB, e l’uso del filtro antipop ridurrà il rischio che ciò accada. Il posizionamento relativo tra microfono e cantante può cambiare a seconda di vari fattori, tra i quali l’acustica della stanza, il tipo di esecuzione vocale e se il cantante ha una voce più o meno profonda. Regolazione del livello di ingresso: L’NT-USB è già impostato con una regolazione di guadagno interna ottimale, senza nessun bisogno di regolazioni fisiche di livello sul corpo del microfono. Qualsiasi regolazione di livello necessaria per impostare il livello di registra- zione ideale può essere fatta nel vostro programma di registrazione o nelle preferenze di sistema del vostro computer.
